This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland, +2 more states.
• Report breaking news and exclusive insights on healthcare policy and politics, with a focus on Congress while also monitoring state and local policymaking.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues who cover various aspects of healthcare regulation, providers and suppliers, and health insurance sectors.
• Write and report on fast-paced stories, in-depth features, and analytical pieces.
• Build strong relationships with key stakeholders to develop a robust network of sources.
• Monitor data, filings, market trends, and industry changes to uncover stories before competitors.
• Propose audience-centric story ideas and foresee developments in coverage.
• Collaborate effectively with editors, audience teams, and other newsroom personnel.
• Contribute to newsletters, promote content on social media, and engage in digital publishing processes.
• Participate in Modern Healthcare events, panels, podcasts, and award ceremonies as necessary.
• Keep informed about trends, innovations, and various forces that are reshaping the healthcare sector.
• Publish content throughout the day, analyze audience behavior using analytics, and work with teams on comprehensive coverage.
• Operate from a home office in the Washington area with occasional travel to cover events.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 3 years of reporting experience.
• Demonstrated ability to break news and establish trustworthy sources.
• Proficient in writing clear, concise, and accurate content under tight deadlines.
• Strong news judgment coupled with a sense of curiosity.
• Capability to thrive in a digital-first environment and manage multiple developing stories.
• Proficient in interpreting data, financial documents, legislation, research, and regulatory filings.
• Comfortable using analytics platforms, research databases, and AI-driven search or transcription tools.
• Skillful in generating innovative enterprise story ideas.
• Preferred experience in covering healthcare, politics, Congress, or related subjects.
• Experience with newsletters, audience analytics, multimedia, and/or event participation is preferred.
• This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and does not qualify for overtime pay.
