This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Provide coverage for Newark schools on behalf of Chalkbeat

• Balance rapid news reporting with in-depth and long-term projects

• Hold education officials accountable for their actions

• Collaborate effectively with colleagues within Chalkbeat and with external media partners

• Engage with readers to discover and develop story ideas

• Act as an informed resource for diverse audiences regarding the functioning of education systems

• Establish sources and cultivate relationships within the Newark community

• Represent Chalkbeat at various public events

• Conduct investigative and accountability reporting utilizing public records and data

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five years of experience in journalism

• Proven ability to build diverse sources in various environments

• Proficiency in investigative reporting techniques

• Experience leveraging public records and data to uncover compelling stories

• Ability to work with a breaking news mindset and decisiveness

• Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles

• Genuine passion for education and alignment with Chalkbeat’s mission

• Familiarity with education topics is a significant advantage, though not mandatory

• Connections to the Newark area are a plus

• Experience in data journalism is an added benefit

• Proficiency in a language other than English, particularly Spanish or Portuguese, is a bonus

• Must have authorization to work in the U.S.
