Principal UX Designer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the university’s web design system in Figma, encompassing components, patterns, usage guidelines, and documentation.

• Spearhead the tokenization of the design system to establish a scalable and consistent foundation across various products and platforms.

• Collaborate with web development to enhance the design system and ensure alignment between design and production.

• Detect and address usability challenges across university web properties.

• Guarantee that web experiences comply with WCAG 2.1 AA and ADA/Section 508 accessibility standards.

• Organize, execute, and synthesize usability testing utilizing tools such as Userlytics.

• Convert research insights into prioritized design suggestions.

• Develop repeatable testing methodologies.

• Contribute to audience journey mapping and optimize conversion rates.

• Assess and integrate AI-assisted design tools and streamline workflows.

• Oversee freelance designers through delegation, prioritization, and quality evaluation.

• Organize design tasks in agile sprints alongside the web development team.

• Engage with web development, marketing, and content partners.

• Uphold design consistency and quality across all contributors and channels.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in UX design, human-computer interaction, interaction design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• At least 7 years of experience in UX or product design, including direct ownership of a design system.

• Proven experience in constructing and maintaining design systems in Figma, including component libraries and tokenization.

• Familiarity with planning and conducting usability testing using tools like Userlytics.

• Working knowledge of journey mapping and techniques for optimizing conversion rates.

• Comprehensive understanding of web accessibility standards, specifically WCAG 2.1 AA and ADA/Section 508.

• Experience implementing AI-assisted design tools and other technologies to enhance efficiency and output.

• Proven ability to work closely with web development teams to transition designs into production.

• Experience managing and delegating tasks to freelance or contract designers, ensuring accountability for team output.

• Experience working in agile sprints in close collaboration with development teams.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills across design, development, and marketing teams.

• Comfortable making informed design decisions despite incomplete information and delivering iteratively.

• Ability to operate within an established design system, adhering to brand and technical constraints.

• Capacity to balance hands-on design execution with strategic system-level thinking and prioritization.
