
Principal Software Engineer – Platform Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Lead the necessary service-side modifications driven by cell architecture, including re-architecture and shared libraries.
• Break down numerous microservices into subsystems that operate with independent lifecycles.
• Identify and address horizontal scalability issues across various regions, cells, and deployment models.
• Take ownership of the application configuration management framework for environments from start to finish.
• Manage services and libraries intended for private and isolated cloud deployments.
• Design and implement modifications directly within product services while collaborating with the teams that own them.
• Establish architecture patterns and reference implementations for product teams.
• Shift configuration to be a runtime concern instead of hardcoding it into service code.
• Collaborate with Cloud Platform, SRE, and DevEx at the service/platform interface.
• Elevate architectural standards and mentor Staff and Senior engineers.
• Integrate AI tools into daily development practices for sustained productivity improvements.
• Extensive hands-on experience in architecture for large microservice ecosystems, ideally encompassing hundreds of services.
• Proficient in Java and Python, with a willingness to engage with other technology stacks.
• Proven history of decomposing large service architectures into subsystems that evolve independently.
• Demonstrated experience in designing for horizontal scalability across regions and independent deployments.
• Familiarity with cell-based, multi-tenant, or multi-region architectural frameworks.
• Strong background in cloud-native technologies, including Kubernetes, containers, and AWS.
• Experience in externalizing configuration and eliminating environmental coupling from application code.
• Proven ability to implement significant changes in codebases managed by other teams.
• Track record of recognizing architectural limitations before they escalate into incidents.
• Capability and enthusiasm to design, lead, influence, and execute ambitious technical roadmaps.
• Experience with Vespa is a plus.
• Familiarity with private, isolated, on-premise, or air-gapped deployments is a plus.
• Experience in designing and managing shared libraries or internal frameworks utilized by multiple teams is a plus.
