Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Design and create new systems while enhancing existing ones.

• Deconstruct complex challenges into fundamental components to develop efficient solutions.

• Collaborate with product teams to grasp significant development units and pinpoint opportunities for reuse.

• Take ownership of and advance the technical strategy and architectural direction across three teams.

• Review, enhance, and refactor infrastructure to align with modern architectures.

• Design and develop software applications that handle high traffic and large scale, as well as data-flow processes and deployment infrastructure.

• Construct monitoring, alerting, automated build and deployment pipelines, along with systems for measuring application performance.

• Advocate for best practices in test coverage, enterprise standards, target architecture, high availability, scalability, low latency, and fault tolerance.

• Establish common engineering standards, patterns, and guidelines throughout the broader function.

• Identify and lead efforts to resolve systemic technical risks and dependencies across teams.

• Design and create a comprehensive QA platform or solution.

• Lead solution-design discussions and assess tools and technologies for feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and organizational suitability.

• Influence long-term technology decisions and investment priorities in collaboration with engineering, product, and business stakeholders.

• Ensure that solutions align with enterprise architecture, scalability, reliability, and security objectives.

• Serve as a principal technical advisor on major or long-term decisions.

• Lead teams in developing new systems and initiatives; mentor, guide, and support team members.

• Review code for quality, accuracy, and efficiency.

• Oversee daily work-unit deliveries, participate in Agile stand-ups, escalate blockers, and ensure timely task completion and sprint goals.

• Communicate updates to stakeholders and collaborate on timelines.

• Assist team members in developing their skills.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

• Proficiency in one or more programming languages including Java, TypeScript, or NodeJS, with a willingness to learn the others.

• Over 5 years of experience in building high-traffic web applications and deploying them to production.

• Familiarity with cloud-based platforms, preferably AWS.

• Experience in supporting live applications, debugging, reading logs, and using Grafana or AWS CloudWatch.

• Demonstrated experience writing SQL queries and working with SQL databases like MySQL, as well as NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB.

• Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Kubernetes, and Helm.

• Experience with code and build tools like GitLab, CI/CD, Jenkins, and Sonar.

• Background working in an Agile team environment.

• Ability to manage production issues and provide on-call support for live systems.

• Composed personality with an ability to maintain a broad perspective.

• Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate ideas and project status.

• Proficient documentation skills using Confluence, a wiki, or similar platforms.

• Strong time management skills, with the ability to deliver work punctually and evaluate and estimate tasks effectively.

• Capability to collaborate with technology and product teams while managing expectations.

• Experience working across multiple teams and on cross-team projects.
