This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Establish and communicate the architectural vision for key components of Retail Point of Sale.
• Ensure that systems facilitating new POS functionalities are designed to be secure, scalable, observable, and resilient.
• Assist teams in designing dependable checkout processes, hardware, network connectivity, payment systems, sales, inventory, and order workflows.
• Conduct architectural deep-dives to uncover opportunities for simplifying systems, minimizing duplication, enhancing performance, and reducing operational risks.
• Propel enhancements in reliability, availability, latency, and recovery.
• Detect recurring incidents, customer issues, and non-project overhead, then devise actionable plans to resolve them.
• Establish and refine engineering practices in areas such as design, testing, deployment, observability, incident management, and technical decision-making.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Support, and engineering leaders to transform ambiguous challenges into clear technical strategies.
• Coach senior engineers and technical leads.
• Foster cross-team alignment without the need for formal authority.
• Contribute actively to the broader Retail Engineering team.
• Influence the architecture and technical direction of Lightspeed’s Retail Point of Sale experience.
• Extensive experience in designing and constructing business-critical software systems in production environments.
• Proven technical leadership across multiple teams or a wide product area.
• Experience in shaping architecture for large, evolving systems characterized by significant scale and operational complexity.
• Proficient in building and managing cloud-based systems with high standards for reliability, security, and performance.
• History of achieving significant outcomes under tight deadlines and with incomplete information.
• Strong systems-thinking capabilities.
• Experience spanning multiple technology stacks or technical layers, including backend services, web and mobile clients, data repositories, APIs, event-driven systems, and infrastructure.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
• Capacity to moderate technical discussions, navigate disagreements, and guide groups towards decisions.
• Hands-on involvement, including prototyping, design reviews, and direct contributions as necessary.
• Proficiency in English as a working language is essential.
• Familiarity with point-of-sale, commerce, ecommerce, payments, inventory, or transaction-heavy systems is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Knowledge of distributed systems, offline-capable software, multi-region systems, or high-availability platforms is a plus but not required.
• Experience with hardware integrations, payment terminals, peripherals, or unreliable network environments is beneficial but not essential.
• Understanding of domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, data consistency, and migration strategies is a plus but not required.
• Experience in incrementally modernizing large or legacy systems is advantageous but not required.
• Experience leading technical initiatives across web, backend, mobile, and platform teams is a plus but not required.
• Experience in people management or formal technical leadership roles is a plus but not essential.
