Principal Software Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Define and articulate the architectural vision for crucial components of the Retail Point of Sale (POS) platform.

• Ensure that the systems supporting new POS functionalities are designed to be secure, scalable, observable, and resilient.

• Assist teams in designing dependable experiences related to checkout, hardware, network connectivity, payments, sales, inventory, and order workflows.

• Conduct thorough architectural analyses to identify opportunities for system simplification, duplication reduction, performance enhancement, and operational risk mitigation.

• Propel enhancements in reliability, availability, latency, and recovery processes.

• Recognize recurring sources of incidents, customer challenges, and out-of-project workloads, then formulate actionable plans.

• Establish and refine engineering practices in design, testing, deployment, observability, incident management, and technical decision-making.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Support, and other Engineering leaders.

• Mentor and guide senior engineers and technical leaders.

• Foster alignment across teams without relying on formal authority.

• Contribute to the wider Retail Engineering organization.

• Influence the architecture and technical direction of Lightspeed’s Retail Point of Sale experience.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in designing and developing mission-critical software systems in production settings.

• Proven history of technical leadership across multiple teams or within a broad product area.

• Experience in shaping architectures for large-scale, scalable systems with considerable operational scale and complexity.

• Background in building and managing cloud systems with stringent reliability, security, and performance requirements.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver essential outcomes within tight timelines and with incomplete information.

• Strong systems-thinking capabilities.

• Experience working across various technology stacks or technical layers, including backend, web and mobile clients, databases, APIs, event-driven systems, and infrastructure.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Good judgment in facilitating technical discussions, managing disagreements, and steering groups toward clear decisions.

• A highly hands-on approach, capable of diving deep, prototyping, reviewing architectures, and contributing directly.

• Proficiency in English is required as a working language.
