Principal Engineer, GIS

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Act as the organization’s leading expert and acknowledged thought leader in GIS/geospatial engineering.

• Establish the technical direction for GeoCube, SPHERE, RisQ, and associated capabilities.

• Formulate technical strategy, reference architectures, and engineering standards for geospatial data ingestion, Medallion data architecture, and Model Lifecycle Management.

• Address intricate geospatial and spatial-analytics issues involving data fusion, geoprocessing, and real-time situational awareness dashboards.

• Collaborate with Technical Directors to ensure geospatial strategy aligns with the enterprise's technical direction.

• Propel innovations such as AI/ML-enabled geospatial analytics and predictive risk modeling.

• Act as the primary Solution Architect for GIS initiatives across various active contracts/projects.

• Design and supervise geodatabase architecture, geoprocessing models, and cloud-native geospatial pipelines.

• Mitigate technical risks and manage escalations within GIS programs.

• Influence technical strategy and solution quality that impact revenue and customer satisfaction.

• Lead the creation of technical content, win themes, differentiators, and solution strategy for GIS-oriented proposals and captures.

• Counsel capture leadership and executives on technical viability and competitive positioning.

• Assist in preparation for oral presentations, client technical due diligence, and solution demonstrations.

• Write technical blog posts, white papers, and case studies.

• Present at industry conferences, client forums, and technical webinars.

• Represent Niyam in professional GIS/geospatial communities.

• Mentor engineers across all levels.

• Contribute to the GIS/Geospatial Center of Competency through the development of standards, training materials, and reusable technical assets.

• Aid in hiring and conducting technical interviews for geospatial positions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.

• Capable of obtaining and maintaining a Top Secret (TS) security clearance.

• Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Geospatial Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

• 12+ years of progressive experience in GIS/geospatial engineering, including architecture-level design of geospatial platforms and analytics solutions.

• Extensive hands-on experience with the Esri ArcGIS platform (ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro), geodatabase design, and geoprocessing model development.

• Experience in architecting cloud-native, scalable geospatial data platforms using AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, including data pipelines and API-enabled analytics.

• Proficient in Python and/or other programming languages utilized for geospatial data engineering, automation, and analytics.

• Demonstrated experience in leading technical proposal content, solution architecture, and capture support for federal government contracts.

• Proven ability to mentor engineers and establish technical standards across teams or programs.

• One or more industry-recognized certifications of significant difficulty in a relevant technical field, such as Esri Technical Certification, AWS/Azure Solutions Architect, or GISP.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in authoring technical publications and presenting to technical and executive audiences.

• Preferred: Active Top Secret clearance or previous eligibility for DoD/Intelligence Community clearance.

• Preferred: Background in hazard risk modeling, emergency management, or disaster response platforms.

• Preferred: Knowledge of AI/ML-enabled geospatial analytics, predictive modeling, or the Medallion data architecture pattern.

• Preferred: Previous publication of technical white papers, blog content, or peer-reviewed papers, alongside experience speaking at industry conferences.

• Preferred: Experience supporting GSA MAS, OASIS+, or other federal contract vehicle proposal efforts.
