
Personal Lines Underwriting Director – Strategy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts, +1 more state.
• Define and refine the Personal Lines risk appetite framework, encompassing growth targets, profitability thresholds, volatility tolerance, and concentration limits.
• Create and uphold a comprehensive portfolio strategy view that spans products, segments, geographies, and distribution channels.
• Evaluate portfolio performance against risk appetite and strategic goals; identify emerging risks, exposure shifts, and areas of opportunity.
• Direct scenario analysis and stress testing under diverse market, weather, and competitive conditions.
• Collaborate with Actuarial and Finance teams on underwriting strategy, pricing adequacy, capital considerations, and financial outcomes.
• Convert portfolio insights into strategic guidance for Product and Underwriting teams.
• Offer recommendations on areas for growth, maintenance, or reduction, backed by thorough analysis.
• Establish portfolio KPIs and dashboards for senior leadership oversight and informed decision-making.
• Prepare and deliver executive and Board-level presentations regarding portfolio health, tradeoffs, and strategic alternatives.
• Lead cross-functional initiatives involving rebalancing actions and growth adjustments.
• Manage and nurture a team of strategy professionals through coaching, feedback, and career development.
• Act as a strategic thought partner to Personal Lines leadership on market positioning and enterprise risk tradeoffs, including reinsurance strategy.
• 7+ years of relevant professional experience.
• 3+ years of demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional teams.
• Strong understanding of insurance portfolio dynamics, risk appetite frameworks, and return tradeoffs.
• Capability to integrate underwriting, pricing, capital, and growth strategies into a cohesive portfolio perspective.
• Comfortable interpreting complex analyses, scenarios, and tradeoffs without oversimplifying.
• Ability to challenge assumptions, influence senior leaders, and facilitate challenging tradeoff discussions.
• Proactive in anticipating market, competitive, regulatory, and climate-related portfolio shifts.
• Proven experience in leading and developing high-performing strategy teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; credible and persuasive with senior leaders and Boards.
