
Personal Lines Underwriting Director – Strategy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts, +1 more state.
• Define and enhance the risk appetite framework for Personal Lines, which includes growth objectives, profitability benchmarks, volatility limits, and concentration thresholds.
• Create and uphold a strategic portfolio view across various products, segments, regions, and distribution channels.
• Evaluate portfolio performance in relation to risk appetite and strategic goals; identify emerging risks, shifts in exposure, and potential opportunities.
• Conduct scenario analysis and stress testing under diverse market, weather, and competitive conditions.
• Collaborate with Actuarial and Finance teams on underwriting strategies, pricing adequacy, capital considerations, and financial results.
• Convert portfolio insights into strategic guidance for Product and Underwriting teams.
• Offer recommendations on areas for growth, maintenance, or reduction, backed by thorough analysis.
• Set up portfolio KPIs and dashboards for senior leadership monitoring and decision-making.
• Prepare and deliver executive- and Board-level presentations on portfolio performance, trade-offs, and strategic alternatives.
• Spearhead cross-functional initiatives related to portfolio rebalancing and growth strategies.
• Oversee and cultivate a team of strategy professionals through mentoring, feedback, and career development.
• Act as a strategic advisor to Personal Lines leadership concerning market positioning and enterprise risk trade-offs, including reinsurance strategies.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience.
• At least 3 years of demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional teams.
• Deep understanding of insurance portfolio dynamics, risk appetite frameworks, and return trade-offs.
• Capability to integrate underwriting, pricing, capital, and growth strategies into a cohesive portfolio perspective.
• Comfortable interpreting complex analyses, scenarios, and trade-offs without oversimplifying.
• Ability to challenge assumptions, influence senior executives, and manage challenging trade-off discussions.
• Proactively anticipates shifts in market conditions, competition, regulations, and climate-related portfolio factors.
• Proven track record in leading and developing high-performing strategy teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; credible and persuasive with senior leaders and Board members.
