PDF Annotation & Transcription Expert – Japanese

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan, +3 more countries.

📋 Description

• Review and assess assigned Japanese PDF pages for language accuracy, legibility, relevance of content, and the absence of personal information.

• Identify and delineate each significant page region, which includes titles, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, and answer fields.

• Assign component types and establish reading-order indices.

• Connect regions to corresponding figures or tables using parent component identifiers.

• Accurately transcribe all text in the original Japanese script, encompassing kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana, and handwritten content.

• Mark any illegible source regions.

• Document language, type of document, source, page dimensions, and flags for tables, formulas, and handwriting.

• Review colleagues’ work comprehensively as a secondary Japanese expert.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be a native Japanese speaker with complete proficiency in kanji, hiragana, and katakana, including furigana and variant character forms.

• Demonstrated professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or similar document-heavy roles.

• Exceptional character-level accuracy and attention to detail.

• Systematic implementation of a taxonomy across numerous pages.

• Ability to work with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, examination papers, and handwritten documents.

• Fluent Japanese language skills are essential; all tasks are conducted in Japanese.

• Engagement as an independent contractor.

• Currently unable to support H1-B or STEM OPT candidates.

• Nice-to-have: Experience in AI training data annotation, labeling, grading, or bilingual evaluation.

• Nice-to-have: Experience in MTPE, subtitling, bilingual QA, OCR correction, or post-editing.

• Nice-to-have: Skills in Japanese typesetting, copy-editing, proofreading, or digitization.

• Nice-to-have: Knowledge of Unicode normalization, Japanese input methods, full-width and half-width forms, and handling of kanji variants.
