This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Take charge of the daily operational rhythm of the team, which includes managing priorities, monitoring queue health, allocating resources, conducting standups, defining escalation paths, and ensuring SLA performance.
• Oversee and nurture skilled payroll operations specialists by providing coaching, constructive feedback, performance management, and facilitating their career development.
• Enhance transparency in team performance while identifying risks, bottlenecks, and emerging trends.
• Collaborate with the senior SME to translate technical expertise into standardized processes, comprehensive documentation, and enhanced capabilities for the broader team.
• Manage intricate operational escalations and engage with technical or cross-functional partners when specialized expertise is necessary.
• Work alongside leaders from Support, Filing, Tax Operations, Product, and R&D to address cross-functional challenges.
• Act as a strategic advisor to the department head on matters related to team strategy, staffing, performance, and operational decisions.
• Lead the team tasked with investigating and resolving complex historical payroll issues across various payrolls, quarters, tax jurisdictions, payments, and filings.
• Experience in a startup or high-growth company environment.
• 4-6+ years of experience in operations, technical support, support operations, client service, or a similarly execution-focused environment.
• Significant experience in people management.
• Proven track record in managing a team, coaching performance, and establishing clear standards for outcomes and work practices.
• Formal experience in people management, including hiring and fostering team growth.
• Ability to organize team efforts around specific metrics.
• Strong operational judgment concerning priorities, capacity, SLAs, customer impact, and risk assessment.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Capability to bridge the gap between team-level details and leadership-level perspectives.
• Quick learner in niche domains.
• Comfort in managing individuals who may initially possess greater technical expertise.
• Preference for developing robust systems and refining processes.
• Familiarity with payroll or payroll tax is advantageous, though not mandatory.
• Experience in fintech, payments, financial operations, or any other regulated or technically intricate sector is a plus.
• Ability to work remotely without distractions while maintaining quality, communication, and productivity.
