National Director – Field Medical Affairs, Ophthalmology

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Lead the strategy and implementation of field medical affairs for the client’s ophthalmology, with a focus on retinal products.

• Support and direct the field-based MSL team in engaging healthcare professionals (HCPs), key opinion leaders (KOLs), professional societies, advocacy groups, and value-based institutions.

• Recruit, retain, mentor, coach, and develop MSL talent.

• Conduct performance evaluations, professional development initiatives, succession planning, field coaching, and territory visits.

• Oversee KOL/HCP planning, the development of regional and national KOLs, territory plans, and scientific knowledge dissemination.

• Set team goals and objectives that align with scientific imperatives and brand strategies.

• Create and implement training and onboarding programs focused on subject matter expertise.

• Execute team metrics and insights reporting for stakeholders.

• Gather, analyze, and share field insights with EVERSANA and client leadership.

• Collaborate with clinical operations to address clinical trial needs.

• Coordinate with commercial and market access teams while adhering to compliance guidelines.

• Lead medical strategy, tactical plans, resource allocation, and achievement of medical goals.

• Maintain expertise in the pathophysiology of nAMD, standards of care, and targeted therapies.

• Support investigator-initiated trial proposals and provide insights from KOLs.

• Represent the client at medical meetings, congresses, and scientific exhibitions.

• Ensure adherence to corporate SOPs and legal and regulatory requirements.

• Provide medical support, clinical input, and training to internal teams.

• Ensure updates to the MSL database, documentation of KOL interactions, and responses to medical information inquiries.

• Manage activities within the designated budget.

• Assist with planning for publications, manuscripts, abstracts, posters, presentations, and congress submissions.

• Collaborate with investigators, authors, publication agencies, and cross-functional teams on scientific publications.

• Review scientific materials for accuracy and consistency.

• Oversee field medical business objectives, client program goals, team launches, staffing, performance standards, personnel actions, and monthly metric reporting.


⛳️ Requirements

• An advanced degree (OD, MD, PhD, PharmD, MSN, or NP/PA) is mandatory.

• A minimum of 4 years of industry experience is preferred.

• At least 2 years of demonstrated leadership experience managing field-based teams is preferred.

• Experience in the ophthalmology and retina specialty field is required.

• Background in pharmaceutical field-based roles and/or the pharmaceutical industry is essential.

• Exceptional scientific acumen and the ability to convey complex scientific concepts effectively.

• Strong planning, organizational, analytical, conceptual, administrative, communication, presentation, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.

• Proficiency with standard computer technologies, integrated business software, word processing, spreadsheets, and common applications.

• Demonstrated business acumen and the capacity to manage multiple priorities.

• Familiarity with personnel management, including recruitment, hiring, progressive discipline, coaching, and motivation.

• Knowledge of PHARMA, OIG, and FDA regulations related to non-promotional activities.

• Excellent leadership, management, and communication skills.

• Capability to lead field strategy and execute tactical plans.

• Ability to cultivate positive relationships with management, peers, and subordinates.

• Working knowledge of institutions and clinics.

• Willingness to travel frequently (70%) with overnight stays.
