Meteorologist, GIS Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Provide support for a long-term contract with the Weather Prediction Center (WPC).

• Collaborate with meteorologists from NCEP, NWS field offices, academia, and external partners to create tools for short- to medium-range forecasting.

• Utilize scientific and technical meteorological knowledge to develop tools that ascertain hazard information, including rainfall, snowfall, and temperature data.

• Create web applications employing modern industry languages and tools.

• Work in conjunction with NWS personnel and outside researchers to enhance forecasting tools.

• Contribute to scientific publications as required and participate in off-site conferences, symposia, and outreach events related to hazardous weather.

• Transition forecaster tools and web services developed at WPC and other NOAA locations into operational status.

• Design training materials to facilitate the integration of new tools and techniques into operational practices.

• Develop mapped-data tools while independently selecting methods, conducting analyses, and offering recommendations.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• An advanced degree in meteorology, hydrology, or related earth science fields (MS or above is preferred).

• Experience with deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their use in diagnosing and predicting hazardous weather.

• Proficiency in weather forecasting for short to medium-range periods.

• Familiarity with GIS, GeoTiff, JSON, and GeoJSON formats.

• Knowledge of React, JavaScript, Zarr, Cloud Services, and Version Control Systems.

• Experience providing software development support within a collaborative team environment.

• Proficient in Python and shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.

• Strong organizational and project management skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities for documentation and presentations.
