Mechanical Engineering Lead, Data Centers

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Serve as the main liaison for clients, addressing inquiries and concerns.

• Cultivate and maintain robust client relationships.

• Collaborate with various disciplines and lead the mechanical engineering team, encompassing HVAC, fire protection, and plumbing.

• Design and supervise the construction of mechanical systems for hyperscale data centers.

• Create detailed specifications for pumps, fans, air handling units, and other mechanical equipment.

• Draft internal and external reports based on research findings.

• Ensure discipline plans align with project scope, schedule, budget, and overall team objectives.

• Remain updated on codes and technologies relevant to mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.

• Assess mechanical system performance, proposing enhancements and upgrades.

• Provide technical assistance during construction, addressing RFIs and resolving issues as they arise.

• Participate in job site visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities as necessary.

• Ensure adherence to industry standards, codes, and regulations.

• Evaluate and suggest technologies and equipment aimed at improving performance and minimizing operational costs.

• Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate chiller systems into data center infrastructure.

• Analyze energy consumption and pinpoint optimization and cost-saving opportunities.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering along with ten (10) years of pertinent experience in mechanical design and/or mechanical engineering, particularly in data center infrastructure, or a demonstrated equivalent of experience and/or education.

• A Professional Engineer License (P.E.) is mandatory.

• Significant experience in mechanical engineering for data centers or similar critical facilities.

• Profound knowledge of HVAC, piping, and fire suppression systems design and construction.

• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.

• Capability to develop and sustain strong client relationships.

• Creative thinking skills to identify opportunities for enhancing the client experience.

• Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software.

• Experience in data center design and construction, including design criteria and industry standards.

• Flexibility to work remotely from various locations in the U.S. where AECOM has an office.

• Occasional travel may be necessary for client meetings, project milestones, onsite collaboration sessions, job site visits, or commissioning activities.

• In-person onboarding on Day 1 at an AECOM office is a condition of employment.
