Managing Director – Central

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Supervise a team of advocates and formulate policy advocacy strategies within the Central U.S. region.

• Drive member engagement efforts throughout the region.

• Create and execute multi-year strategies and campaigns aimed at expediting the shift to 100% clean energy and electrified transportation.

• Spearhead the development of political and policy strategies while pinpointing future opportunities for policy and political achievements in targeted states.

• Oversee a geographically dispersed advocacy team and coordinate with lobbyists on-site.

• Collaborate with United’s policy team on both short- and long-term policy goals in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Texas, and Wisconsin.

• Participate in legislative, regulatory, and administrative processes, including interactions with governor’s offices.

• Build consensus with members on policy stances and facilitate calls and discussions regarding policy.

• Engage members through interactions with decision-makers, lobby days, candidate education, earned media, and expert testimony.

• Take part in legislative, rulemaking, and administrative processes as required.

• Maintain strong relationships with coalition partners, philanthropic organizations, allies, and legislative, regulatory, and administrative personnel.

• Represent United to funders and potential members while assisting in fundraising efforts.

• Establish connections with regional decision-makers and utilize the advanced energy sector to influence policy changes.

• Travel for advocacy days, conferences, stakeholder meetings, staff development, and other initiatives by United.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree; preferred fields include Political Science, Public Policy, or Economics, or equivalent relevant experience.

• At least ten years of professional experience in public policy, with some involvement in the clean energy or transportation sector.

• Proven experience managing a remote team.

• Recognized as a subject matter expert in a specific area of focus.

• Experience in political campaigning or organizing, particularly in clean energy advocacy.

• An entrepreneurial mindset, adaptable attitude, and capability to work independently.

• Proficiency in engaging members, customers, and funders, effectively communicating United’s value proposition.

• Ability to lead, inspire, and nurture an internal team while collaborating across project teams.

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Intellectual curiosity, a questioning nature, and strong listening and problem-solving abilities.

• Competence in managing project budgets and financials.

• A performance-driven individual with a robust work ethic, proactive approach, and commitment to achieving objectives.

• Candidates should possess creativity and flexibility, with the capacity to develop and implement strategies while engaging diverse stakeholders across various venues.

• Willingness to travel frequently; up to 30% travel to targeted states is expected.

• Strong preference for candidates residing in the Midwest or Central Plains States.
