Local Reporter

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.

📋 Description

• Act as a host or contributor for The Local: Nashville

• Assist readers in understanding the local dynamics driving change and help them connect with their community and the news

• Introduce audiences to captivating characters and locations

• Facilitate and stimulate discussions

• Curate content that is relevant to the local community from a diverse array of sources

• Foster relationships with readers through callouts, social media interactions, and in-person events

• Collaborate with colleagues to refine the tone, structure, and content of The Local: Nashville

• Choose focal topics, conduct original reporting, and integrate contributions from team members

• Keep track of local media, including influencers, and highlight the region's finest journalism

• Collaborate with local outlets on coverage and initiatives when suitable

• Work in conjunction with The Local staff from other cities and New York

• Explore various formats such as Q&As, features, data stories, explainers, and visual presentations

• Engage with readers and cultivate community both online and offline

• Shape and uphold The Local's presence on social platforms

• Observe how news organizations and brands engage with communities and foster loyalty

• Establish engagement targets, monitor progress, and leverage data to inspire innovation and experiments

• Represent The Local at community/media events and contribute to planning and executing company events

• Uphold support for journalistic independence and the mission of The New York Times

• Report to the Deputy Editorial Director, Newsletters

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in digital storytelling

• Proven exceptional news judgment, audience-centric thinking, and experience in breaking news, features, analysis, and enterprise

• Previous experience in newsletters and social media, along with a passion and commitment to both

• Proficiency with analytics tools to extract actionable insights

• Familiarity with various storytelling formats, including data visualization and video

• A history of taking initiative and successfully executing digital media projects

• Strong ties to Nashville with extensive experience covering the area

• Submission of resume, cover letter, and approximately six work samples in any format

• Experience hosting a podcast, newsletter, video series, or live events is advantageous

• Background in video, audio, and data journalism is a plus

• Proven dedication to integrity, independence, and accuracy

• A collaborative attitude, openness to experimentation, and a sense of humor

• Strong connections within Nashville, along with sources from various fields

• Diverse interests and ability to communicate in a conversational manner
