LGBTQ+ Youth Phone Counselor, Part-Time

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Timely respond to incoming text and chat messages via the 988 Lifeline platform

• Utilize active listening, empathy, and evidence-based crisis intervention techniques to engage users

• Carry out suicide risk assessments and escalate high-risk situations to supervisors or emergency services as necessary

• Maintain professional boundaries, cultural sensitivity, and practices rooted in trauma-informed care

• Offer referrals to local mental health services, shelters, substance use treatment, or other resources

• Accurately document interactions in electronic records in accordance with agency and legal requirements

• Participate in regular supervision, debriefings, and training sessions

• Ensure confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA standards

• Address incoming calls from LGBTQ+ youth in crisis or experiencing emotional distress

• Provide LGBTQ+ affirming behavioral health, social, and community resources

⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field is preferred

• Proficient typing skills

• Strong written communication abilities

• Skills in crisis de-escalation

• Comfort in working with diverse populations, including LGBTQIA+, youth, and individuals in active mental health or substance-related crises

• Bilingual or multilingual capabilities are preferred

• Required internet access and a private, quiet workspace

• Must comply with HIPAA and confidentiality standards

• Must adhere to the 988 Lifeline's standards
