Level 3 DDC Controls Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.

📋 Description

• Take the initiative to lead and carry out the installation, programming, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and closure of DDC control systems for intricate commercial projects.

• Analyze project drawings, specifications, operation sequences, and control submittals to create and implement effective functional control solutions.

• Program and configure DDC controllers, supervisory devices, graphics, and associated peripheral equipment.

• Develop and execute control logic and sequences that enhance system reliability, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and operational performance.

• Conduct point-to-point checkout, functional testing, system startup, commissioning, and performance verification.

• Diagnose complex control issues related to controllers, sensors, actuators, valves, relays, networks, communication protocols, and equipment interfaces.

• Identify system weaknesses and collaborate with the relevant trades to implement corrective measures.

• Provide troubleshooting and support for BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, MS/TP, and IP-based building automation communication networks.

• Coordinate with mechanical contractors, electricians, TAB contractors, equipment manufacturers, IT staff, commissioning agents, project managers, engineers, and clients.

• Review control drawings, wiring diagrams, operation sequences, specifications, and equipment documentation.

• Offer field direction and technical support to Level 1 and Level 2 Controls Technicians.

• Educate and mentor junior technicians in controls installation, wiring, programming, troubleshooting, commissioning, and industry best practices.

• Assist with system upgrades, retrofitting, expansions, integrations, and service-related projects.

• Conduct field inspections to ensure installation quality, wiring accuracy, device placements, panel construction, and regulatory compliance.

• Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including point lists, commissioning records, as-built data, startup documentation, and punch lists.

• Engage in project coordination, progress review, and client meetings.

• Act as a technical liaison for clients, aiding in the resolution of operational issues.

• Support project managers and sales teams with technical assessments, system improvements, estimating assistance, and future opportunities.

• Stay informed about DDC, HVAC, networking, IoT, and building automation technologies.

• Ensure all work adheres to relevant codes, project specifications, company policies, and safety standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5+ years of direct experience with DDC controls, building automation systems, HVAC controls, or a related discipline.

• Proven capability to independently oversee complex controls projects from installation to commissioning and closure.

• Advanced programming skills in Reliable, Niagara, Tridium, or similar DDC/BAS platforms.

• In-depth understanding of BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and IP-based communication systems.

• Experience in integrating DDC systems with HVAC equipment and other building systems.

• Solid understanding of commercial HVAC systems, including AHUs, RTUs, VAV systems, chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, and related equipment.

• Proficient in reading and interpreting controls drawings, electrical schematics, mechanical plans, operation sequences, and project specifications.

• Strong knowledge of low-voltage control wiring, 24VAC systems, relays, transformers, sensors, actuators, and electrical troubleshooting.

• Familiarity with electrical codes and safe electrical work practices.

• Ability to resolve complex issues using diagnostic tools, software, meters, network tools, and system information.

• Comprehensive understanding of control system networking, including BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, Ethernet, and basic network troubleshooting.

• Capability to differentiate controls-related issues from mechanical, electrical, equipment, TAB, or networking deficiencies.

• Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, engineers, project managers, and internal teams.

• Demonstrated leadership abilities and a willingness to train, mentor, and assist junior technicians.

• A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to various project sites as needed.

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

• A technical degree, trade certification, or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, controls, or a related field is preferred.

• Equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
