This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Serve as Qualus’ Protection & Control Subject Matter Expert, offering technical governance across various projects and programs.
• Establish and maintain the philosophy, standards, and best practices for protection, control, and metering in high-voltage substations.
• Act as Lead Engineer or Technical Authority on intricate, high-risk, or unconventional projects, providing final technical approval and guidance.
• Evaluate and authorize protection planning, philosophy, and application documents.
• Review and approve one-line diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
• Supervise protection coordination studies and relay settings for utility transmission systems, including the review and validation of work done by others.
• Lead or participate in senior-level design reviews, hazard and risk assessments, and near-miss investigations.
• Assist in Factory Acceptance Tests, Site Acceptance Tests, and critical field inspections for complex installations.
• Provide advice to project teams on construction sequencing, outage planning, and commissioning strategies.
• Engage in client technical meetings, Safety by Design discussions, and constructability review sessions.
• Offer technical oversight for project scopes, feasibility studies, cost estimates, and definition-phase deliverables, including the review of assumptions and risks.
• Contribute to Business Development through technical strategies, execution methods, and risk assessments for proposals and pursuits.
• Serve as a primary technical escalation point for clients, internal teams, and external partners.
• Mentor both senior and junior engineers while contributing to the continuous enhancement of P&C standards, tools, and engineering practices.
• 10-15 years of experience in utility-focused protection, control, and metering engineering, with proven system-level responsibilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligibility to obtain; U.S. PE is seen as an asset.
• Recognized expertise in substation protection philosophy, encompassing transmission line, transformer, bus, and feeder protection.
• Extensive experience in reviewing and approving detailed P&C design drawings and technical deliverables.
• Experience conducting protection coordination studies and relay settings for high-voltage transmission systems.
• Proficient knowledge of protection software and platforms such as ASPEN, CAPE, EasyPower, SKM, and SEL / GE relay families.
• Practical experience with substation construction, commissioning, outage planning, and operational interfaces.
• Proven ability to apply technical judgment on non-standard, complex, or first-of-a-kind applications.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with EPC projects and familiarity with utility maintenance and operational practices are strong advantages.
