This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Utilize knowledge of protective relaying and control systems in HV and EHV substations.
• Engage in modifications and upgrades of substations, including calculations, design documentation, and specifications.
• Formulate relaying philosophies and select appropriate relay, control, and communication equipment.
• Create SCADA and telecommunication concepts and configurations.
• Supervise I/O assignments and connection diagrams.
• Provide guidance to engineers and designers in protection and controls engineering design initiatives.
• Coordinate detailed design phases across all engineering work aspects.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve engineering challenges.
• Analyze and design single line, substation relaying and metering, A.C. schematic, and D.C. schematic diagrams.
• Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review.
• Independently assess calculations and drawing preparations conducted by others.
• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers to ensure comprehensive and timely designs.
• Review current facilities and suggest upgrades and replacements.
• Present findings and recommendations to clients and colleagues.
• Engage in peer learning through Sargent & Lundy's Communities of Practice.
• Mentor junior engineers.
• May require travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant sites for construction coordination and field verification.
• A Bachelor of Science Engineering degree is required for this position.
• Minimum of 12 years of experience in designing substations at 138kV and higher.
• Possession of a PE license.
• Experience acting as a firm/client liaison in a support or leading engineering capacity.
• Proficiency in writing and providing support documentation for relay calculations.
• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles used in the creation of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Familiarity with any of the following software programs: SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or vendor-specific software.
• Understanding of design codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
• Experience with vendor protective relay equipment such as SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, and Basler.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• U.S. work authorization sponsorship is not available.
• A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
• A degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Previous experience with in-line, bus and equipment protection; control of breakers, transformers, and similar equipment; RTU and data concentrator-based SCADA systems; as well as telemetering and communications, including fiber optics, microwave, and power line carrier is desirable.
• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is valued.
• Construction and start-up experience is beneficial.
