Lead Software Engineer – Backend Engineering, Integrations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the backend architecture, encompassing service boundaries, data models, event contracts, and the design of the integration layer.

• Design and implement microservices using Java 21 / Spring Boot on Cloud Run for functionalities such as licensing, case management, payments, documents, and notifications.

• Implement PostgreSQL (AlloyDB) for data persistence, ensuring row-level data isolation and search indexing.

• Develop asynchronous event flows utilizing Pub/Sub and Eventarc.

• Execute scheduled and timer-driven processing through Cloud Tasks and Cloud Scheduler.

• Create Cloud Workflows orchestrations for multi-service pipelines.

• Manage direct integrations with external state and federal systems via REST, SOAP, SFTP, and webhooks.

• Oversee payment workflows, including integration of hosted payment pages and settlement reconciliation.

• Ensure platform security and compliance with a focus on encryption and data isolation.

• Establish and enforce standards for test coverage, code reviews, and CI/CD across the backend team.

• Decompose backend scope, sequence tasks, and communicate delivery status to the client technical lead and customer stakeholders.

• Mentor engineers and facilitate the technical onboarding of new contractors.

• Collaborate with the client technical lead, mobile and frontend engineers, and customer stakeholders from the initial definition stage through to final delivery.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of professional backend engineering experience, particularly with Java and Spring Boot.

• Proven technical leadership experience within a backend team or workstream, including architecture setting, code reviews, mentoring engineers, and contributing to production code.

• Experience delivering production systems on Google Cloud Platform, with complete ownership from design through to launch and operation.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

• Proficiency in Java 21 and Spring Boot 3.x for microservice development.

• Expertise in service and API design across a multi-service platform, including strategies for contracts and versioning.

• Familiarity with PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, and managing versioned migrations.

• Knowledge of GCP serverless services: Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, Cloud Tasks, Cloud Workflows, and Cloud Scheduler.

• Understanding of event-driven architecture and messaging patterns, including idempotency, retries, and dead-letter handling.

• Experience with external system integration using REST, SOAP, SFTP, and webhooks.

• Knowledge of API security protocols including OAuth 2.0 / OIDC and JWT.

• Experience with automated testing, including JUnit and integration tests; familiarity with CI/CD and relevant quality standards.

• Ability to work directly with non-engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into a delivery plan.

• Experience with workflow engines like Flowable and BPMN, as well as business rules engines.

• Knowledge of AlloyDB and BigQuery.

• Experience with payment processing integrations.

• Familiarity with working in government or regulated environments, including FIPS, CJIS, or HIPAA.

• Possession of Google Cloud Professional certifications.

• Prior experience leading a distributed or contractor engineering team.
