Lead Relay Field Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.

📋 Description

• Conduct testing and routine maintenance on power equipment for Transmission and Distribution substations.

• Test various types of relaying including electro-mechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relays.

• Evaluate pilot channel equipment such as power line carrier, pilot wire, transfer, transfer trip, fiber optic, CVTs, line tuners, and line traps.

• Assess controls and communications devices.

• Interpret substation drawings effectively, including single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.

• Assist in the development of procedures and test plans for both maintenance and construction efforts.

• Read and confirm voltage and current inputs to relays accurately.

• Verify the functionality of local and SCADA metering, trips, alarms, and function switches.

• Calibrate relays as necessary.

• Perform routine troubleshooting and repair tasks on substation relaying and control systems.

• Commission new substations and related power equipment.

• Organize, plan, and efficiently execute testing activities, ensuring timely completion without service disruptions.

• Provide technical project support to Field Service staff.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of field experience for Senior level and 7 years for Lead level in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing, and repairing substation relaying and control schemes.

• Preferred experience in substation design, construction, commissioning, and SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing.

• In-depth understanding of 3-phase power systems along with power system protection and control schemes.

• Familiarity with test equipment and software used for testing.

• Skilled in using test equipment, tools, and wiring.

• Capable of interpreting wiring and elementary diagrams.

• Basic testing skills necessary to perform the outlined duties.

• Competent PC skills.

• Ability to quickly learn and implement testing procedures for various substation equipment.

• Strong communication skills with diverse groups, able to tailor messages to the audience and context.

• Capacity to learn and apply client-specific switching procedures and safety protocols.

• Ability to reference and complete tasks in accordance with relevant specifications.

• Effective English communication skills, including reading and writing, essential for safety-related materials, documentation, and client engagement.

• Willingness to perform fieldwork both indoors and outdoors regularly.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, business acumen, and management skills.

• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.

• An Associate’s degree from an accredited 2-year technical college in Electrical Power & Controls (EPC) or an Electrical Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution, or similar military training and experience is preferred.
