Lead Backend Engineer, Java, Python, AWS

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design, create, and enhance backend services utilizing Java and contemporary JVM technologies.

• Engage in implementing, testing, debugging, and actively resolving production challenges.

• Take ownership of technical design and architectural choices for intricate backend and distributed systems.

• Develop scalable microservices, APIs, and event-driven architectures.

• Contribute to services, automation, or data workflows using Python.

• Construct and manage applications within AWS and Kubernetes-based environments.

• Oversee systems throughout their lifecycle, from initial design to production operation.

• Identify enhancements in performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

• Establish engineering practices focusing on automated testing, integration testing, and code quality.

• Review code and technical designs, offering technical guidance.

• Mentor engineers and elevate engineering standards.

• Collaborate with Product, Platform, and various engineering teams.

• Effectively communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Contribute to CI/CD, observability, and production-readiness practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience.

• Excellent and recent hands-on experience in Java development.

• Strong proficiency with Spring / Spring Boot.

• Professional experience with Python in production environments.

• Significant experience in designing microservices and distributed systems.

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and technologies such as Kafka.

• Extensive commercial experience with AWS.

• Practical experience with Kubernetes and Docker.

• Experience in designing and integrating REST APIs.

• Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL.

• Familiarity with CI/CD and modern software delivery methodologies.

• Strong practices in automated testing, including unit and integration tests.

• Demonstrated experience in making impactful architecture and system-design decisions.

• Experience in mentoring engineers, conducting code/design reviews, or serving as a technical lead.

• Experience owning complex features or services from end-to-end, including their operation in production.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with stakeholders.

• Fluent in English (C1+).

• Long-term B2B contract engagement.

• Nice to have: Experience with Azure in addition to AWS.

• Nice to have: Experience in building or integrating AI-enabled products.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of analytics, data-processing, or event-driven systems.

• Nice to have: Experience in an international, distributed engineering environment.
