Independent Consultant – Power-to-X, Advanced Biofuels

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Conduct technical research, policy analysis, and provide value-chain expertise in the fields of renewable hydrogen, PtX fuels, and sustainable aviation fuel.

• Assist RSB in its endeavors related to PtX fuels, advanced biofuels, SAF policy, certification readiness, and grant-funded initiatives.

• Facilitate technical research, stakeholder mapping, policy analysis, and documentation for RSB’s PtX fuels and advanced biofuels initiatives.

• Evaluate renewable electricity, hydrogen, CO₂ sourcing, biomass, and waste feedstocks.

• Identify regional development prospects, certification prerequisites, GHG accounting considerations, inter-sector resource dynamics, and international market accessibility.

• Aid in the creation of roadmaps and policy briefing outputs, initially concentrating on India while potentially supporting activities related to MENA.

• Contribute to other team priorities within RSB’s PtX fuels and advanced biofuels portfolio.

• Generate technical research reports, policy briefs, roadmap contributions, stakeholder mapping documents, and consultation summaries.

• Execute resource and feedstock evaluations.

• Conduct life-cycle GHG modeling and carbon accounting assessments.

• Perform market, regulatory, and certification-readiness analyses under frameworks such as EU RED, ICAO CORSIA, and UK SAF policy.

• Complete the onboarding process for RSB’s systems, delivery methods, and sustainability framework if selected for the roster.

• Submit proposals for specified project scopes when requested.

⛳️ Requirements

• Excellent written and verbal proficiency in English.

• Availability to overlap with CET/CEST working hours for at least 4 hours per day.

• Proven track record of output and delivery in the relevant field of expertise.

• Adherence to applicable local laws and regulations, including tax and social security obligations.

• Legal authorization to provide consultancy services in the country of residence or operation.

• Strong skills in collaboration and communication.

• Capability to work independently and proactively communicate progress, risks, and opportunities.

• Self-sufficiency in a remote, fully digital work environment.

• Reliable internet access.

• For organizations: capacity to assign suitably qualified personnel and ensure consistent delivery, including coverage for absences.

• For organizations: assurance that proposed personnel meet essential criteria.

• Technical knowledge in PtX fuels, renewable hydrogen technologies, advanced biofuels, or sustainable aviation fuel pathways (desirable).

• Familiarity with EU RED, ICAO CORSIA, and UK SAF policy (desirable).

• Understanding of global developments in PtX fuels and advanced biofuels, market-access requirements, and relevant resources and feedstocks (desirable).

• Proven experience in producing original technical content, resource assessments, policy analysis, roadmap contributions, applied sustainability analysis, or certification-related evaluations (desirable).

• Knowledge of renewable hydrogen, PtX, and advanced biofuel production pathways and value chains (desirable).

• Awareness of scale-up challenges associated with renewable electricity, eligible carbon sources, sustainable feedstocks, hydrogen infrastructure, project bankability, certification readiness, and market recognition (desirable).

• Familiarity with life-cycle GHG analysis and accounting methods relevant to PtX fuels (desirable).

• Awareness of trends in the PtX market and policy (desirable).
