Geographic Information Systems Technician I

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Execute GIS program initiatives utilizing GIS hardware and software to generate maps, spatial databases, and thematic data.

• Develop, modify, correct, convert, and disseminate base maps and thematic datasets.

• Digitize and sustain spatial databases containing information pertaining to Maryland.

• Record procedures and verify data for precision and completeness.

• Complete authorized metadata forms and generate maps based on the resultant information.

• Assist in the management of geospatial data that supports address assignment and the maintenance of district boundaries.

• Oversee data that includes street centerlines, address ranges, precincts, and census blocks.

• Import, convert, and reconcile GIS data obtained from various external sources.

• Assess external information and data for quality and suitability for production use.

• Provide geographic coordinates and calculate distances and areas of features.

• Interpret legal descriptions and certify alterations in boundary lines.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS Technology, Cartography, Computer Science, Library Science, or a relevant field.

• A minimum of nine credit hours in coursework specifically related to GIS operation or management.

• At least two years of proven experience at a level comparable to a GIS Trainee.

• Proficient in GIS desktop software for digitizing, editing, and converting spatial data.

• Strong attention to detail in verifying data for accuracy and completeness, as well as in completing metadata forms.

• Must possess authorization to work in the United States.

• All tasks must be conducted from within the continental United States.

• Must successfully pass a criminal history background check prior to commencement, with annual renewals for the duration of the engagement.

• Candidates should be available during Eastern Time business hours.

• Preferred: Coursework or practical experience with census geography and TIGER files.

• Preferred: Experience handling street centerline and address range data.

• Preferred: Experience in cartographic production and map layout for public-facing outputs.

• Preferred: Prior experience delivering GIS work for a state or local government program.

• Preferred: Maryland residency for three years or longer.
