Freelance Senior FX Artist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design and develop intricate visual simulations, encompassing fire, smoke, fluids, explosions, destruction, magical, and abstract effects.

• Adhere to Rodeo FX's artistic and technical standards.

• Utilize Houdini proficiently to create optimized and versatile effects.

• Independently manage assigned FX tasks from initial setup through to final rendering.

• Conduct quality control on files, caches, and workfiles prior to submission.

• Suggest straightforward and effective artistic solutions that align with the project vision.

• Engage in daily meetings and incorporate feedback constructively.

• Tailor effects to suit narrative requirements, visual style, and pacing of scenes.

• Enhance simulations to add creative value to shots.

• Optimize caches, ensure setup stability, and adhere to internal technical guidelines.

• Detect technical issues and offer practical solutions.

• Collaborate with the Pipeline team to integrate or test new tools.

• Verify the compatibility of effects with layout, lighting, and compositing departments.

• Provide realistic estimates and promptly communicate challenges or scheduling risks.

• Work with production to adjust priorities when necessary.

• Maintain respectful communication with production, leads, and artists from various disciplines.

• Participate in turnovers, briefings, and monitor project progress.

• Stay updated with the latest visual-effects practices, techniques, and references.

• Share knowledge, tools, and techniques with fellow colleagues.

• Document and refine FX department workflows.

• Embrace feedback to foster continuous improvement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years of previous experience in FX in a VFX studio is preferred.

• Strong proficiency in Houdini, including Pyro, Flip, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs.

• Fundamental understanding of compositing with Nuke.

• Basic knowledge of rendering with Arnold and Karma.

• Familiarity with USD and Solaris.

• Good grasp of movement, physics, and visual rhythm.

• Demonstrated rigor, autonomy, attention to detail, and team spirit.

• Familiarity with Flow Production Tracking is a plus.

• Experience in developing Houdini tools is advantageous.

• Knowledge of Python or VEX scripting is beneficial.

• Availability to join within the next few weeks.

• Candidates primarily located in North America or Europe will be considered for this specific project.
