This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.
• Perform an independent technical assessment of a Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis.
• Analyze if fire hazards and potential fire-related accident scenarios have been sufficiently recognized and examined.
• Review the fire protection strategy and its alignment with the facility's overall nuclear safety framework.
• Evaluate fire hazard analyses, combustible-loading assessments, fire-area boundaries, and relevant fire scenarios.
• Assess preventive and mitigative measures credited for fire-related incidents.
• Examine fire detection, alarm, suppression, water-supply, confinement, smoke-control, and emergency-response systems.
• Determine if fire protection systems and controls safeguard workers, the public, the environment, nuclear materials, and safety-critical equipment.
• Evaluate the potential fire impacts on multiple systems, redundant safety equipment, electrical cables, confinement barriers, or the facility’s capability to achieve and sustain a safe condition.
• Review the identification, classification, and functional requirements of fire protection-related safety structures, systems, and components.
• Assess fire barriers, penetration seals, separation features, and passive fire protection strategies.
• Evaluate the technical assumptions, methodologies, calculations, and conclusions that support the fire protection sections of the safety analysis.
• Review adherence to relevant Department of Energy requirements, industry standards, building and fire codes, and NFPA standards.
• Identify technical gaps, inconsistencies, vulnerabilities, or areas necessitating further analysis or clarification.
• Prepare clear, traceable, and technically sound review comments.
• Engage in remote technical meetings and discussions for comment resolution.
• Assist in resolving technical inquiries related to fire protection and nuclear safety.
• Draft written findings, observations, recommendations, and review documentation.
• Complete assigned tasks within the established project timeline and authorized scope.
• Maintain independence, objectivity, and confidentiality throughout the review process.
• Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related technical field.
• Extensive experience in fire protection engineering within nuclear, Department of Energy, commercial nuclear, or other highly regulated environments.
• Proven experience in reviewing safety-basis documents for nuclear facilities.
• Experience with Preliminary Documented Safety Analyses, Documented Safety Analyses, fire hazard analyses, or similar nuclear safety documentation.
• Solid understanding of nuclear facility fire protection requirements and applicable NFPA codes and standards.
• Experience in evaluating both active and passive fire protection systems.
• Knowledge of fire-related accident analysis and the selection of preventive and mitigative measures.
• Capability to assess safety-related structures, systems, and components from a fire protection viewpoint.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, safety analyses, and other technical documents.
• Proficient in developing independent, objective, and technically sound conclusions.
• Strong technical writing, analytical, and verbal communication abilities.
• Capacity to work independently and adhere to a fast-paced document-review schedule.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and virtual collaboration tools.
• Must be a U.S. citizen and capable of meeting relevant security and project-access criteria.
• Required to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived organizational or personal conflicts of interest related to similar projects or vendors.
