This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Idaho.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers to support the design of an innovative advanced reactor.

• Conduct thermomechanical analyses on reactor internals, utilizing high-temperature graphite and other specialized or exotic materials.

• Carry out engineering analyses in compliance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

• Perform seismic evaluations following ASCE 7 and other relevant codes and standards.

• Create physics-based mathematical models for mechanical, chemical, or electrical systems to assist in validating engineering designs.

• Execute structural mechanics evaluations and analyses of structures, systems, and components under normal operating conditions, natural hazards, and accident scenarios.

• Conduct linear and nonlinear seismic soil-structure interaction analyses, site-response assessments, and advanced nonlinear structural evaluations.

• Develop models and calculations to assess the response of nuclear facilities and systems to seismic ground motion.

• Aid safety analyses by simulating potential accidents and assessing their structural and mechanical impacts.

• Support design teams with alternative analyses, equipment selection and sizing, vendor evaluations, equipment summaries, specifications, drawings, supporting calculations, and engineering design documentation.

• Document designs through controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions, calculations, and technical reports.

• Ensure that designs comply with established requirements and relevant codes and standards.

• Prepare engineering analyses and documentation according to approved engineering processes and quality standards.

• Implement ASME, ASCE, and other mechanical and structural codes concerning U.S. Department of Energy requirements for safety-class systems.

• Offer technical leadership, peer reviews, engineering checks, and consultation to fellow engineers.

• Act as a primary author for professional technical reports, calculations, and presentations.

• Provide management with advice in assigned areas of technical expertise and represent the organization in technical discussions with project stakeholders.

• Assist in organizational business-planning and development activities as needed.

• Work both independently and collaboratively while fostering positive and professional relationships under tight schedules and deadlines.

• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Lead Reactor Project Engineer.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program, along with a minimum of eight years of relevant professional experience; or a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program, with at least six years of relevant professional experience.

• In-depth knowledge of structural dynamics and seismic analysis.

• Experience in linear and nonlinear seismic soil-structure interaction analysis.

• Proven experience conducting site-response analyses.

• Familiarity with advanced seismic probabilistic risk assessment methodologies.

• Understanding of nuclear systems and advanced reactor technologies.

• Knowledge of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

• Acquainted with ASCE standards and other applicable mechanical and structural codes.

• Proficient in engineering design techniques, tools, and principles for creating technical plans, drawings, blueprints, models, and calculations.

• Capability to apply engineering principles, methods, procedures, and analytical tools to address complex technical challenges.

• Skill in developing sound technical conclusions by evaluating and synthesizing information from diverse sources.

• Ability to identify existing and potential engineering challenges.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Competence in conveying complex technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team as well as work independently.

• Talent for providing constructive technical feedback while maintaining professionalism in high-pressure situations and tight deadlines.

• Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.

• Must achieve satisfactory results from a pre-employment screening, including a drug and breath alcohol test and a Motor Vehicle Record check.

• Candidate must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a DOE Security Clearance.

• Willingness to travel to the Materials and Fuels Complex as required.
