Field Service Engineer I – Analytical Instrumentation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +6 more states.

📋 Description

• Deliver on-site and remote technical assistance for Thermo Scientific chemical analysis instruments within a designated territory.

• Install and commission analytical instruments while adhering to established testing protocols.

• Conduct preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repairs.

• Resolve mechanical, electrical, optical, electronic, computer, and software-related instrument issues.

• Identify instrument performance issues and determine corrective measures.

• Test instruments post-repair, maintenance, and installation to ensure compliance with performance specifications.

• Offer technical support to clients and fellow field service personnel.

• Foster positive working relationships with customers, laboratory staff, system users, and colleagues.

• Travel to customer sites, including short-notice and overnight trips.

• Complete field service reports, expense reports, service documentation, and other necessary records.

• Provide fundamental customer training on instrument operation, routine maintenance, and best practices.

• Elevate complex technical issues to senior Field Service Engineers, Technical Support, or product specialists.

• Relay feedback to technical support, engineering, and product quality teams.

• Revise and refine service documentation, procedures, and technical information.

• Maintain assigned tools, testing equipment, service parts, and company assets.

• Adhere to company and customer-site safety protocols.

• Cultivate technical expertise through product training, field experience, and teamwork.

• Assist in projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing business operations and service delivery.

• Primarily support customers within assigned Midwest, Northeast, or Southeast territories, with travel up to 80%.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Electronics, Instrumentation, or a related technical/scientific discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant technical experience.

• Candidates should reside in or near Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, Cleveland, Augusta, Nashville, Raleigh, or Durham.

• Must be located within reasonable distance to a major airport.

• Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.

• Capability to systematically diagnose technical issues and determine suitable corrective actions.

• Proficient in reading and interpreting technical documentation, electrical schematics, diagrams, and service procedures.

• Basic knowledge of electrical and electronic systems and the safe use of diagnostic and testing equipment.

• General understanding of laboratory instrumentation and scientific measurement principles.

• Proficient in troubleshooting computer hardware, instrument software, communication systems, and basic networking issues.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Windows operating systems and standard business software.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with professional working proficiency in English.

• Willingness to travel regionally and, when necessary, nationally or internationally.

• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport as required.

• Must possess and retain a valid driver's license.

• Compliance with customer-site safety requirements and applicable Thermo Fisher Scientific safety policies is essential.

• Capability to safely lift, move, or handle equipment and service components weighing up to 50 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Preferred experience in troubleshooting electrical, electronic, mechanical, optical, computer, or software systems.

• Beneficial experience with analytical, mechanical, or robotic instrumentation.

• Previous experience in field service, laboratory instrumentation, equipment maintenance, military technical roles, engineering technician roles, or related customer-facing technical positions is advantageous.

• Willingness and ability to continually learn new technologies and successfully complete required technical training.
