Engineering Manager, Notifications

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee a team of full-stack engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the notifications platform, which includes Elixir services, Python backends, pubsub pipelines, and Kubernetes infrastructure.

• Establish the technical vision for the notifications infrastructure and ensure it scales reliably as both volume and complexity increase.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing teams to outline and implement the notifications roadmap.

• Leverage experimentation and metrics to enhance notification engagement, user retention, and long-term trust.

• Cultivate a high-performing team through recruitment, coaching, and adherence to engineering best practices.

• Work alongside platform consumers across Discord to advance shared primitives.

• Collaborate with engineering leadership on strategic planning and organizational enhancements.

• Report directly to the Senior Engineering Manager of Growth.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer, with substantial experience in building and operating backend or infrastructure systems at scale.

• At least 2 years of experience in a managerial role within engineering.

• Proficiency in Elixir, Python, pubsub/streaming pipelines, and Kubernetes.

• Strong grasp of reliability, throughput, and cost considerations at scale.

• Experience working collaboratively with product managers, designers, data scientists, and engineers.

• Proven track record of mentoring engineers and facilitating team member success.

• Strong sense of ownership regarding technical decisions with the ability to engage in in-depth discussions.

• Capability to implement 80/20 thinking, facilitate rapid iterations, and ensure high-quality delivery.

• Bonus: Experience in leading shared platforms or primitives.

• Bonus: Experience in deploying push notifications or re-engagement systems at a consumer scale, including deliverability, throttling, and policy considerations.

• Bonus: Full-stack experience in both frontend and backend development.
