This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Lead a team of 6–8 engineers involved in the SSH client, web application, and backend services, managing 1:1s, performance evaluations, mentorship, career development, and daily project delivery.
• Take ownership of the technical architecture throughout the stack you oversee, including frontend systems, terminal/SSH client patterns, backend service design, API agreements, performance, and the future direction of the codebase.
• Enhance engineering processes by defining the team's planning, shipping, and learning methodologies. Introduce efficient practices where beneficial (such as sprint cadence, code reviews, on-call duties, and incident responses) and avoid procedures that hinder team progress.
• Collaborate with Product to refine the roadmap, prioritize technical debt, and convert customer requirements into engineering tasks. Assist in sequencing the team's projects and clarifying tradeoffs.
• Maintain a technical focus; review architectural proposals, assist engineers in overcoming obstacles, evaluate technical tradeoffs, intervene during incidents, and contribute code when it yields the most significant impact (~20% of your time, plus or minus).
• Recruit and develop the team by sourcing, interviewing, persuading, and onboarding engineers. Contribute to defining hiring standards and shaping the culture as the team expands.
• Communicate effectively across the organization, articulating technical risks and tradeoffs to founders, product teams, design, and customer-facing personnel. Function independently in a dynamic environment.
• 5–10+ years of engineering experience, including significant time as a senior engineer or tech lead prior to transitioning into management.
• 1–5+ years of direct management experience with engineers, involving hiring, conducting 1:1s, managing performance, owning sprints/processes, and fostering career growth.
• Strong proficiency in full-stack development. You have built and deployed complex systems on both sides of the wire and can discuss frontend architecture, backend service design, API agreements, and the tradeoffs involved. Familiarity with terminal/CLI clients (TUI frameworks, SSH, CLI usability) is an advantage.
• Proven ability to establish processes from the ground up. You have successfully guided a team from "startup chaos" to consistent delivery without adopting excessive corporate bureaucracy. You understand when processes enhance productivity and when they hamper it.
• Experience in hiring and team-building. You have sourced, interviewed, secured, and onboarded engineers, and possess insights on fostering a strong engineering culture.
• Cross-functional communication skills. Comfortable interacting directly with founders, product, design, and clients. You can clearly convey technical risks and navigate ambiguity without waiting for detailed specifications.
• A pragmatic, ownership-driven attitude. You make decisions with incomplete information, take accountability for results, and operate effectively without needing multiple layers of management.
• Medical/dental/vision coverage - 100% paid for employees, 50% paid for dependents.
• Life and disability insurance - 100% covered for employees.
• 401K plan with a 3% contribution, with no required contribution from employees.
• Education and tuition reimbursement available.
• Accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity benefits provided through our partners.
• Employee Assistance Program offered.
• Legal support available.
• Paid Time Off - up to 6 weeks annually.
• Sick Leave - up to 2 weeks each year.
• Parental Leave - up to 12 weeks.
