This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.
• Lead the Abuse Control Engineering team in addressing urgent, cross-product defense gaps and developing controls for long-term management.
• Establish technical direction and priorities for identifying abuse vulnerabilities, developing controls, and preventing future incidents.
• Recruit, manage, mentor, and support engineers; offer feedback and opportunities for career advancement.
• Convert attacker evidence into technical priorities and provide guidance on safeguard design and assessment.
• Collaborate with Application Security and product engineering teams to implement resilient and appropriately scoped safeguards.
• Supervise experiments that measure risk reduction and their impact on legitimate user conversion.
• Develop regression tests and systems to identify recurring abuse patterns.
• Define success metrics for incubation, including documentation, ownership, handoff criteria, and target timelines.
• Transfer successful controls to permanent product stakeholders.
• Coordinate with security, product, engineering, and other partners on urgent cross-functional initiatives.
• Proven experience managing an engineering team, including setting strategic direction, prioritizing tasks, and ensuring delivery and technical success.
• A solid technical background in software engineering, security engineering, application security, anti-abuse engineering, or a closely related discipline, gained through professional experience, education, or a comparable path.
• Demonstrated experience in recruiting, mentoring, and developing engineers at various experience levels, including providing constructive feedback and facilitating career growth.
• Experience leading cross-functional technical projects involving teams with differing goals, areas of expertise, or ownership boundaries.
• Capability to assess technical designs and steer engineering decisions concerning reliability, security, risk, and product trade-offs.
• Proficient in clearly communicating technical strategies, priorities, risks, and decisions.
• Ability to create clarity in ambiguous or high-pressure situations and convert broad risk challenges into actionable plans, ownership assignments, and measurable results.
• Preferred: experience with experimentation or A/B testing; threat modeling; secure systems design; API safeguards and abuse controls; financial fraud patterns; large-scale data platforms; capability incubation and handoffs; distributed teams.
