This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +2 more states.
• Oversee the editing of The Local newsletter in a minimum of two launch markets, which includes selecting stories, refining content, and managing production.
• Collaborate with reporters in each market as well as The Local team in New York to refine the newsletter's tone, structure, and content.
• Explore various story formats and innovative tools.
• Expand the newsletter's audience and boost engagement through social media, events, outreach, partnerships, and other strategies.
• Cultivate relationships with local news organizations and journalists while developing strategic partnerships.
• Observe how news organizations and brands engage with communities and foster loyalty.
• Establish engagement objectives and monitor progress using data to guide innovation and experimentation.
• Act as a representative for The Local at community and media events, as well as assist in planning and executing company events.
• Report to the Deputy Editorial Director of Newsletters.
• Uphold The New York Times’ commitment to independent journalism.
• Over 8 years of experience in digital journalism or storytelling, including some editorial responsibilities.
• Proven exceptional news judgment, audience-centric thinking, and experience in covering breaking news, features, analysis, and enterprise stories.
• Familiarity with newsletters and social media, coupled with a passion for both.
• Proficient in using analytics tools to extract actionable insights.
• Capability to identify and develop story ideas that have both journalistic importance and audience appeal.
• A history of taking initiative and successfully launching digital media projects.
• Strong connections to the Twin Cities, Phoenix, or Nashville.
• Extensive experience in local journalism.
• Diverse interests in news, politics, business, culture, sports, and various other topics.
• Comprehension of audience needs and the local media landscape.
• A resume, cover letter, and approximately six work samples are required.
• A commitment to journalistic independence, integrity, and accuracy.
• A collaborative mindset, openness to experimentation, and a good sense of humor.
