Distinguished Engineer, Developer Experience

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical architecture, standards, and strategic direction for a core area within DevEx's platform engineering portfolio.

• Act as the primary technical escalation point at the highest level.

• Collaborate with Acceleration leadership and engineering teams to synchronize internal developer platform investments, including CAP, CI/CD, and software supply chain security features.

• Influence architectural choices across Acceleration platforms, focusing on platform interoperability, AI-enabled systems, observability, and edge computing architectures.

• Spearhead the organization’s strategy for an AI-driven Software Development Lifecycle.

• Assess and promote the use of AI coding assistants, agentic development tools, and AI-enhanced engineering workflows.

• Design AI-driven software planning, development, testing, deployment, and operational processes.

• Direct DevEx's open source strategy, identifying open-source opportunities and addressing licensing and intellectual property concerns.

• Advocate for the advancement of key platforms, such as Flip, towards open, AI-driven, and edge-enabled solutions.

• Engage with open source communities and establish best practices for both open source consumption and contribution.

• Influence senior and principal engineers, as well as engineering leaders, to enhance technical standards and promote engineering excellence.

• Assess build-versus-buy options for developer productivity platforms, secrets management, AI infrastructure, and engineering tooling.

• Oversee technical due diligence for the selection of vendor and open source technologies, including API gateways, feature flagging solutions, developer portals, and platform engineering capabilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 12 years of software engineering experience, with substantial technical leadership experience in Principal, Staff+, or Distinguished Engineer positions.

• Proven track record in leading technical strategy and architecture within large-scale enterprise settings, ideally supporting organizations with over 10,000 engineers.

• Extensive hands-on knowledge of internal developer platforms, Kubernetes-based infrastructure, cloud-native technologies, and CI/CD ecosystems.

• Strong background in AI-assisted software development, including coding assistants, agentic development frameworks, and AI-enabled SDLC practices.

• Demonstrated ability to influence technical strategy and architectural decisions across organizational boundaries without direct reporting authority.

• Active involvement and recognized credibility within open source communities, through contributions, maintenance, or leadership of open source projects.

• Outstanding stakeholder management, executive communication, and cross-functional collaboration abilities.

• Experience in evaluating and implementing contemporary developer tooling, platform engineering solutions, and software delivery technologies.

• Familiarity with API gateway technologies such as Apigee, Kong, Azure API Management (APIM), or similar enterprise API platforms.

• Experience with feature flagging platforms, developer portals, software supply chain security, or platform engineering products.

• Background in highly regulated industries like healthcare, financial services, or other compliance-driven sectors.

• Proven success in leading enterprise-wide AI transformation initiatives and scaling AI-enabled engineering practices across large organizations.

• Experience in developing, governing, or accelerating enterprise open source strategies and community engagement programs.

• Strong grasp of observability, edge computing architectures, and modern developer experience best practices.

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent professional experience.
