Director of Software Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead, mentor, and nurture a multidisciplinary engineering team involved in software engineering, product development, machine learning applications, and agentic development.

• Cultivate a high-performing engineering culture that emphasizes ownership, technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

• Set expectations, goals, career development pathways, and performance standards.

• Attract and retain engineering talent while fostering the growth of engineering managers and senior technical leaders.

• Define and refine the technical strategy and architecture for user-facing applications and services.

• Direct architectural decisions and technical trade-offs throughout the product lifecycle.

• Balance product delivery with considerations for reliability, scalability, maintainability, and cost.

• Establish engineering standards and practices, resolving technical risks and dependencies effectively.

• Collaborate with Product and Deployment teams to convert requirements into actionable engineering plans.

• Oversee engineering execution in alignment with product and technology roadmaps.

• Develop planning and development processes that offer visibility into progress, risks, dependencies, and resources.

• Eliminate organizational and technical obstacles.

• Coordinate hardware and software development across design, testing, deployment, and maintenance phases.

• Integrate feedback from field deployments into product and engineering decisions.

• Enhance system availability, performance, observability, security, and operational resilience.

• Establish testing and validation protocols across hardware, embedded software, and cloud systems.

• Collaborate with Deployment and Operations for installation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.

• Create procedures for diagnosing and resolving complex production and field challenges.

• Ensure systems can scale to support a national-level sensing network.

• Work in partnership with Product, Deployment, Data Science, Data Engineering, company leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders.

• Clearly communicate technical strategies, roadmaps, trade-offs, and risks.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of engineering experience, with substantial experience in leading engineering teams and organizations.

• More than 5 years of people management experience, including oversight of senior engineers and/or engineering managers.

• Experience in leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across two or more domains: hardware, embedded systems, edge computing, backend software, cloud infrastructure, or distributed systems.

• Proven experience in building and managing products that integrate physical hardware with software systems.

• Demonstrated experience in scaling engineering teams, processes, and technical infrastructure as a company or product evolves.

• Strong technical knowledge of contemporary software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and production systems.

• Experience in establishing engineering standards, development methodologies, testing practices, and operational excellence.

• Proven ability to make informed technical and organizational choices in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.

• Strong history of recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing engineering professionals.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

• High effectiveness in communication while working in a remote and distributed team environment.

• Proficiency in English is required.
