Director of Financial Accounting

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Lead, direct, and mentor the accounting team.

• Set operational performance metrics, initiate cross-training programs, and develop succession plans.

• Oversee workflow management, delegate tasks, and foster staff development.

• Manage financial close activities at the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end.

• Conduct technical accounting research in accordance with GASB and U.S. GAAP.

• Supervise the preparation of financial statements, MD&A, and footnote disclosures.

• Design and maintain internal controls, risk control matrices, and financial policies.

• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as UBIT tax compliance.

• Act as a liaison with external auditors, Virginia audit agencies, and federal oversight organizations.

• Prepare financial analyses, reports, and recommendations for leadership and board members.

• Streamline accounting processes, workflows, chart of accounts, ERP systems, and reporting mechanisms.

• Author and implement SOPs, desk manuals, and financial policies.

• Enhance accounting workflows and decrease close-cycle durations.

• Align procure-to-pay processes with accounting, purchasing, accounts payable, and vendor management.

• Ensure adherence to procurement regulations for public-sector and higher education institutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related business field.

• A minimum of 5+ years of financial accounting or leadership experience in a health system, hospital, or academic medical center.

• At least 3–5 years of direct supervisory or people-management experience in leading accounting teams.

• Practical experience with Oracle PeopleSoft Financials.

• Extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP and/or GASB frameworks.

• Experience with financial close cycles, complex ledger reconciliations, and internal control frameworks.

• Familiarity with tax compliance for nonprofit or public institutions, including UBIT.

• Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, consensus-building, and executive communication skills.

• An active Virginia CPA license or a reciprocal U.S. jurisdiction license, with the ability to secure Virginia licensure, is highly preferred.

• Preferred: Master’s degree in Accounting, MBA, or Master of Science in Finance.

• Preferred: Experience with Workday Financials, Adaptive Planning, Qlik/Power BI, or Big 4/public accounting audit/advisory experience.

• Preferred certifications: CMA, CGFM, CGAP, or CIA.

• Knowledge of the procure-to-pay lifecycle.

• Understanding of VPPA, eVA, and OMB Uniform Guidance procurement requirements.
