This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Oversee legal support for KOHO’s product innovation and regulatory strategy across KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank.

• Collaborate with Product, Technology, Marketing, Risk, and Compliance teams to offer practical legal insights.

• Assist in the design and rollout of new financial products and features.

• Proactively identify regulatory risks and aid teams in developing compliant solutions.

• Contribute to the establishment and operationalization of a regulated banking entity.

• Facilitate engagement with regulatory bodies such as OSFI, FCAC, and the Bank of Canada.

• Ensure that Marketing and Growth initiatives align with financial services and consumer protection regulations.

• Provide guidance to customer-facing teams regarding complaint management, communication, and fairness issues.

• Develop scalable legal and regulatory processes.

• Assist in Legal knowledge management efforts.

• Mentor members of the Legal team.

• Represent the Legal department in cross-functional and leadership discussions.


⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of post-call experience as a lawyer practicing in Canada, with significant in-house experience.

• Direct experience in advising on the launch of retail banking products.

• Knowledge of financial services regulation, banking law, and consumer protection frameworks.

• Capability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and provide practical, business-focused legal advice to senior stakeholders.

• Proven track record of leading complex legal or regulatory projects with minimal oversight.

• Experience in both a large banking institution and a smaller tech startup or fintech, ideally through a bank charter or launch process.

• Experience interacting directly with regulators.

• Background in lobbying or government relations.

• Familiarity with the RPAA and the Financial Consumer Protection Framework (FCPF).

• Advisory experience in Anti-Money Laundering (AML) at a bank.

• Experience in implementing privacy legislation.

• Experience mentoring or managing junior legal counsel.

• Fluent in French.

• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

• Must be called to the bar in Canada.
