This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.
• Act as a senior leader and strategic collaborator with the Chief of Activation & Justice.
• Ensure the cohesion of legal strategies pertaining to voting and civil rights at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Provide counsel to the Chief Legal Officer regarding the organization's comprehensive legal vision, objectives, and frameworks.
• Convert organizational priorities into actionable initiatives for the Legal Affairs department.
• Analyze evolving jurisprudence to uncover strategic litigation opportunities and risks.
• Offer high-level assessments and insights on case strategy.
• Integrate traditional litigation practices with innovative advocacy models.
• Mentor, coach, and develop the Supervising Attorney and the broader legal team.
• Cultivate accountability, skill enhancement, intellectual curiosity, and professional excellence.
• Ensure effective delegation, workload distribution, and alignment between team strategies and organizational objectives.
• Develop processes and systems that facilitate collaboration, documentation, and high-quality legal work.
• Provide guidance to regional or partner organizations involved in federal court litigation.
• Anticipate shifts impacting litigation strategies by analyzing emerging jurisprudence.
• Collaborate with external pro bono counsel and partner organizations on strategic decisions, amicus positioning, and sustainability of impact litigation.
• Encourage innovation in legal methods and advocacy strategies.
• Work across departments to incorporate legal perspectives into programmatic, policy, and communication strategies.
• Contribute to executive-level decision-making and organizational growth.
• Represent the legal department in strategic initiatives, briefings, and interdepartmental planning.
• Ensure compliance with organizational policies, professional standards, and ethical responsibilities.
• Oversee specific contracts, memoranda of understanding, and critical compliance evaluations.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law institution.
• Active membership in good standing with a U.S. bar is required.
• Preference for federal court admission.
• Minimum of 10–12 years of progressively responsible legal experience, ideally in civil rights, election law, constitutional law, or voting rights.
• Proven experience in leading attorneys and managing legal teams.
• Established track record of strategic legal leadership.
• Strong preference for experience advising executives.
• Exceptional capability to interpret legal developments and foresee emerging jurisprudential trends.
• Strong coaching skills; adept at fostering development through guidance, empowerment, and accountability.
• Ability to build consensus and instill confidence across various hierarchical and disciplinary lines.
• Skilled at merging traditional frameworks with innovative problem-solving.
• Strong project management, delegation, and prioritization abilities.
• Capable of quickly synthesizing complex issues and communicating with clarity and impact.
• Deep commitment to social justice, democracy, and the safeguarding of voters’ rights.
• Ability to navigate the office to access files, meetings, and office equipment.
• Proficiency in operating a computer, laptop, copy machine, and other standard office tools.
• Willingness to engage in occasional travel and advocacy or partner-engagement activities, which may include walking longer distances to event venues, courtrooms, or community spaces.
