Director, Global Food Sovereignty – Movements Program

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Formulate and implement a multi-year strategy for WhyHunger’s Global Movements Program that aligns with the organization's priorities.

• Recognize emerging opportunities, obstacles, and trends in areas such as global food sovereignty, anti-hunger initiatives, agroecology, Indigenous food pathways, climate justice and resilience, economic justice, human rights, and related movement-building sectors.

• Assess and evaluate program impact; adjust strategies based on research, insights, and feedback; and provide reports on impact data.

• Establish and sustain trusted relationships with grassroots organizations, leaders of social movements, networks, and coalitions that promote food sovereignty.

• Create innovative programs like leadership cohorts, agroecology school networks, peer-learning exchanges, and movement gatherings.

• Develop and oversee a portfolio of strategic grants.

• Guide due diligence, proposal assessments, funding recommendations, grant monitoring, and partner stewardship processes.

• Identify and nurture new partnerships with movement leaders, grassroots organizations, and global networks.

• Secure, develop, and manage institutional and major individual funding opportunities.

• Represent WhyHunger in discussions with funders, philanthropic partners, potential donors, and during site visits.

• Contribute to grant proposals, donor reports, concept notes, and funding strategies.

• Advance and promote WhyHunger’s international advocacy agenda.

• Organize and facilitate exchanges, gatherings, learning communities, and collaborative initiatives among partners and allies.

• Act as an internal expert, providing insights to inform advocacy and narrative change strategies.

• Collaborate with Communications on strategic storytelling, partner communications, organizational messaging, content creation, thought leadership, public education campaigns, and opinion pieces.

• Serve as a public spokesperson through media interviews, speaking engagements, and multimedia content.

• Supervise and support the Global Movements Program Manager.

• Manage consultants and contractors as necessary.

• Develop, oversee, and monitor the global programs budget.

• Ensure effective planning, reporting, compliance, and cross-functional coordination of global programs projects.

• Contribute to organizational initiatives and leadership discussions as part of the Program Leadership Team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of progressive experience in food sovereignty, food systems, international development, philanthropy, social movement building, human rights, or related fields.

• Comprehensive understanding of global food systems, food sovereignty frameworks, agroecology, climate justice, and/or Indigenous food pathways, including the underlying causes of hunger.

• Established credibility and pre-existing relationships within food sovereignty or similar movements.

• Extensive experience in developing and managing strategic partnerships with social movements, community organizers, grassroots organizations, or community-based networks in the Global South.

• Proven experience in formulating program strategies with defined outcomes and aligned activities that have shown measurable impact.

• Experience in developing and managing grantmaking portfolios.

• Demonstrated success in designing and leading complex projects and multi-stakeholder initiatives, with the capability to produce effective deliverables and outcomes on schedule and within budget.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.

• Comfort in engaging with diverse audiences.

• Experience in managing diverse staff and consultants.

• Ability to work for and represent WhyHunger at evening or weekend events, and travel domestically and internationally as required.

• Fluency or professional proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or French is preferred.

• Experience in cultivating and maintaining relationships with institutional funders, major donors, and other philanthropic partners is preferred.

• Experience representing an organization within global coalitions and advocacy spaces is preferred.

• Experience serving as a spokesperson and engaging with the press is preferred.

• Experience in designing and executing innovative organizational capacity-building programs is preferred.

• Experience participating in multilateral policy processes (UN, FAO, WFP, or similar) and/or advocating with U.S. policymakers on international food and agriculture issues is preferred.
