Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Europe.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of, architect, design, and deliver the foundational Restate UI.

• Collaborate with engineers during brainstorming sessions and produce production-ready code.

• Clearly articulate execution timelines, retries, queues, states, and failure conditions.

• Develop interfaces that manage large datasets, provide live updates, and include filtering, search, charts, and timelines.

• Design states for loading, empty, partial, error, single-result, and high-volume scenarios.

• Enhance rendering efficiency, data loading, and perceived latency.

• Ensure consistent concepts and terminology throughout the UI, SDKs, and documentation.

• Visually convey durable execution and complex technical systems.

• Create reusable, scalable components and interaction patterns for the design system.

• Collaborate closely with the founding team while exercising significant autonomy.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven front-end development expertise with React, TypeScript, and modern HTML/CSS.

• Capability to independently take a feature from concept to deployment.

• A portfolio showcasing delivered work that highlights both design skills and coding ability.

• Strong design sensibility with a high visual standard.

• Skills in information design, including hierarchy, density, and progressive disclosure.

• Experience in building data-intensive interfaces featuring pagination, virtualization, filtering, search, and charts.

• Knowledge of front-end performance optimization, including rendering efficiency, long lists, re-renders, and bundle size management.

• Ability to visually narrate technical concepts.

• Proficiency in motion design implemented through code.

• Experience in developing design systems within code.

• Capability to interpret API specifications, queries, and backend code.

• Familiarity with AI concepts and leveraging AI to enhance impact.

• Comfort in working directly with the founding team and exercising significant autonomy.

• Nice to have: experience with developer tools, infrastructure, or AI products.

• Nice to have: background in data visualization.

• Nice to have: expertise in accessibility and keyboard-first interface design.

• Nice to have: experience in creative development using Three.js or GLSL shaders.

• Nice to have: comfort with backend development.

• Nice to have: experience in serverless deployment with Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, or similar, including edge runtimes, caching, and cold starts.

• Must be a senior individual contributor rather than seeking to lead a design team.

• Must possess both design and coding skills.

• Must have an interest in technical subjects.
