Counselor – Military Support

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona.

📋 Description

• Accept command and non-command referrals and initiate introductory contact with referred Sailors.

• Share information regarding the SAIL program.

• Perform initial clinical assessments and continuous risk evaluations utilizing the Columbia Suicide Severity Risk Scale (C-SSRS).

• Develop ongoing safety plans following the Veterans Affairs Safety Plan guidelines.

• Collaborate with Sailor commands and provide regular updates about risk, safety, and recovery progress as per DoDI 6490.08.

• Deliver clinical case management according to SAIL protocols and procedures.

• Facilitate connections between enrolled Sailors and behavioral health providers as well as supportive resources.

• Record referral information for Sailors who either decline or cannot be contacted in the FFSMIS SAIL Record System.

• Notify commands when SAIL services are completed and guide on procedures if there is a resurgence of suicide-related risk.

• Report any suspected child abuse, domestic abuse, or violence to the appropriate civilian authorities and Family Advocacy Representatives.

• Provide warm handoffs for restricted reports of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

• Coordinate initial evaluations by qualified Military Treatment Facility/Emergency Department staff following any suicide-related behavior or ideation.

• Work in tandem with behavioral health and other service providers when authorized through a release of information.

• Engage in quarterly site/regional quality-assurance procedures.

• Document and keep current records for all SAIL contacts, assessments, and case management services.

• Intervene effectively in crisis situations using professional judgment, ethical practice, and common sense.

• Maintain case documentation in compliance with relevant policies, laws, and directives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy from accredited programs, or a doctoral degree in clinical/counseling psychology accompanied by a one-year APA-accredited clinical internship.

• Possess a current, valid, unrestricted clinical license or certification allowing independent clinical practice: LCSW, LMFT, LCP, LPC, LCPC, or LMHC.

• Maintain up-to-date clinical credentials and privileges throughout the duration of the assignment.

• A minimum of two years of full-time, post-master’s supervised clinical experience is required.

• Must meet or surpass Tier II clinical practitioner qualifications.

• Exhibit current clinical competence through periodic direct-service clinical experiences within the two years preceding employment.

• Have at least 2 years of experience in providing case management to clinical clients.

• Possess over 1 year of experience delivering clinical services via a telehealth platform.

• Minimum of 6 months’ experience in managing crises involving suicidal clients and implementing safety plans is necessary.

• At least 6 months’ experience in assessing suicidality risk.

• Knowledge of standard documentation requirements for clinical services is essential.

• Ability to thrive in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.

• Strong organizational and time-management capabilities are required.

• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

• Proficiency in both oral and written communication.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and other office software is needed.

• A secure, private, and distraction-free professional workspace suitable for telehealth clinical services is required during working hours.

• Must be physically located within a reasonable commuting distance of a military installation.

• Ability to work core business hours and flexible hours during surge or crisis situations is necessary.

• U.S. Citizenship is required.

• A valid driver’s license, transportation, and auto insurance are mandatory.

• Access to U.S. Government facilities and systems is required.

• Ability to meet the professional and ethical standards set by the applicable discipline or licensing board is essential.

• Preferred qualifications include local residency in the assigned area, experience in short-term counseling within the military community, knowledge of military and community referral resources, and the ability to communicate directly with Command Leadership.
