This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina, +1 more state.
• Act as a liaison between Penn National Insurance and agents.
• Serve as the relationship manager for agents, regional underwriting teams, and corporate departments.
• Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of agents to foster profitable growth in premium volume and policy count.
• Ensure agents are well-informed about commercial lines initiatives, products, policies, procedures, and services.
• Conduct agency prospecting, planning, and management initiatives for commercial lines.
• Collaborate with Underwriters and RVPs on decisions related to small business and mid-market opportunities.
• Undertake limited direct underwriting of small commercial new business as directed.
• Develop agency capabilities to pre-qualify, rate, and bind profitable commercial lines business.
• Cultivate professional relationships with agents, underwriting and claims teams, and corporate departments.
• Assess potential agents and provide written recommendations to the Regional Vice President.
• Maintain ongoing two-way communication between agents and the company.
• Monitor agency growth, profitability, compliance, and performance outcomes.
• Share insights on industry developments, ideas, products, and changes in carrier philosophy.
• Engage in continuous agency prospecting to build a pipeline for future appointments.
• Participate in commercial lines rate evaluations.
• Consistently make underwriting decisions within assigned authority.
• Analyze commercial lines books of business for profitability assessment.
• Create and implement agency profitability strategies and corrective action plans.
• Facilitate agency reviews and measure performance against set goals.
• Train agency staff on programs, products, services, and systems.
• Develop annual marketing plans for the agency/company.
• Evaluate territory profitability, premium growth, and agency representation.
• Collect, compile, manipulate, and analyze data to address business challenges.
• Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the President-Partners Mutual or Regional Vice President.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Ongoing education in specialized insurance areas such as IIA, AU, CPCU, and CIC, as well as other educational experiences to enhance product knowledge and professional relationships.
• Maintenance of an active agent’s P&C license in the domiciled state is preferred.
• A minimum of three years of experience in property/casualty commercial lines underwriting and/or marketing with a Property and Casualty carrier is preferred.
• Agency or broker experience with a strong focus on underwriting exposure/risk and marketing may substitute for carrier experience.
• Technical underwriting expertise in the commercial lines of business offered by Penn National Insurance.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, capable of conveying highly technical information.
• Demonstrated sales, negotiation, and solution-selling abilities.
• Proficient in agency and company automation systems and personal computers, particularly Microsoft Office Suite.
• Outstanding customer service skills.
• Solid financial analysis abilities.
• Excellent time management capabilities.
• Strong skills in commercial lines underwriting analysis.
• Must be able to effectively utilize a computer monitor.
• Must be able to operate a computer, keyboard, applicable printers, and other standard office equipment.
• Must accurately access and enter information using automated systems.
• Must be able to hear and communicate through telephone and/or monitoring devices.
• Must be capable of presenting information to individuals and groups.
• Must be able to interpret and apply concepts that may not be based on established guidelines.
• Must maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
• Must be willing to travel, including overnight stays as necessary.
