Coder Specialist – Inpatient

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +31 more states.

📋 Description

• Provide support for a combination of inpatient community and academic coding across specialties including cardiology, neurology, oncology, and additional service lines.

• Analyze complex inpatient documentation with a high level of expertise.

• Assign diagnosis and procedure codes utilizing ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.

• Ensure accurate code selection in accordance with Official Coding Guidelines and relevant federal and insurance regulations.

• Utilize EMR and/or Computer Assisted Coding software effectively.

• Code high-value and extended-stay cases for all patient categories.

• Investigate coding topics and address documentation issues through appropriate inquiries.

• Act as a subject matter expert for coding leaders and colleagues.

• Suggest modifications to policies and procedures to comply with governmental regulations.

• Engage in ongoing education through webinars, CPT Assistant guidelines, and coding clinics.

• Adhere to ethical coding standards and official coding guidelines.

• Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement and Quality teams to reconcile DRGs for Medicare cases.

• Communicate with clinicians about disease processes to ensure accurate coding.

• Participate in payer audits and coding-related meetings.

• Attend clinical team meetings focused on updates for complex-specialty coding.

• Maintain confidentiality of patient records and report any perceived non-compliance.

• Achieve or surpass 95% quality and 100% productivity standards to support DNFB.

• Execute other assigned responsibilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Coding Certification granted by AAPC or AHIMA.

• Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or a related discipline.

• Generally requires 7 years of experience in inpatient coding within an acute care tertiary facility.

• Familiarity with revenue cycle processes, Clinical Documentation Improvement, research, and health information workflows.

• Advanced expertise in ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines.

• Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.

• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and electronic coding systems or applications.

• Exceptional oral and written communication skills along with strong interpersonal abilities.

• Outstanding organizational, prioritization, and reading comprehension skills.

• Excellent analytical abilities and a keen attention to detail.

• Capable of working independently while exercising sound judgment and decision-making.

• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.

• Proactive and able to work collaboratively.

• Must be able to sit for prolonged periods and maintain focus continuously.

• May require travel to other locations.
