CMS Implementation Engineer – Drupal, Wagtail

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.

📋 Description

• Oversee the comprehensive technical implementation of the new GeoInfo website.

• Set up the core structures, modules/packages, and publishing workflows in Drupal and/or Wagtail.

• Develop approved reusable templates, page models, structured content types, and taxonomies.

• Assist in the website's information architecture from Level 0 through Level 2 and beyond.

• Collaborate on architectural decisions with technical, infrastructure, security, and agency stakeholders.

• Implement priority content migration workflows.

• Extract, clean, and upload legacy PDFs, scientific images, and downloadable datasets into CMS media libraries.

• Manage URL routing, 301 redirects, menus, breadcrumbs, and transitions from the old site to the new site.

• Direct technical testing that includes rendering, responsive UI, editorial workflows, permissions, search indexing, and launch functionality.

• Integrate third-party institutional systems, APIs, and enterprise databases such as Ellucian Banner.

• Monitor and document deliverables, backlog stories, bugs, and technical debt utilizing Jira.

• Provide a thoroughly tested, secure, production-ready website filled with validated migrated content by the specified deadlines.

⛳️ Requirements

• 3–5+ years of proven hands-on CMS development and technical implementation experience.

• Proven history of delivering several production website builds, custom module/model configurations, and large-scale data migrations.

• Direct expertise in Drupal (PHP, Composer, Twig) and/or Wagtail (Python, Django).

• Extensive technical knowledge of modular structured content, reusable templates, atomic page components, custom field configurations, and multi-tier editorial publishing workflows.

• Experience in executing content migration pipelines, database transformation scripts, and digital asset migrations for large static repositories.

• Familiarity with end-to-end web QA, functional and cross-browser testing, accessibility compliance (WCAG), redirect rule engines, and go-live deployment procedures.

• Strong ability to collaborate across software engineering, UI/UX design, content strategy, project management, and executive client stakeholder teams.

• Experience in managing implementation sprints, tickets, pull requests, and bug backlogs with Jira or similar agile project management tools.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Preferred: Residents of New Mexico and West Texas willing to travel on-site to Socorro, NM, up to 2 times during the project lifecycle.

• Preferred: Direct experience in engineering web solutions for Higher Education, scientific research organizations, geological surveys, or public-sector agencies.
