This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Nicaragua, +5 more states.
• Handle and oversee a high volume of incoming patient calls in both English and Spanish.
• Schedule, confirm, and adjust patient appointments utilizing athenahealth.
• Verify insurance eligibility while collecting patient demographics and intake data.
• Direct calls to clinical staff, providers, and relevant departments.
• Convey appointment preparation details, office procedures, and practice policies.
• Ensure timely and professional follow-up with patients.
• Triage patient calls and address medical inquiries within the Medical Assistant's scope of practice under provider oversight.
• Manage and submit prescription refill requests via athenahealth.
• Coordinate outgoing referral communications to specialists and ancillary facilities.
• Follow up with patients regarding lab results, imaging, and care plan instructions.
• Return patient calls and respond to medical inquiries within the designated scope.
• Document patient interactions, call notes, and clinical correspondence in athenahealth.
• Send and reply to patient messages through the athenahealth patient portal.
• Assist providers with prior authorization requests and referral management.
• Ensure that clinical documentation is thorough, accurate, and compliant with HIPAA regulations.
• Direct experience with athenahealth (athenaOne) EMR is mandatory.
• Proficiency in both English and Spanish is essential.
• A minimum of 2 years of Medical Assistant experience in a clinical setting within the U.S.
• Experience in orthopedics is highly preferred.
• Strong preference for candidates with front and back office experience.
• Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA) is preferred but not required if sufficient relevant experience is demonstrated.
• Solid understanding of medical terminology, prescription workflows, referrals, and patient communication.
• Capability to accurately respond to clinical questions within the Medical Assistant's scope of practice.
• Exceptional phone etiquette and patient service skills are required.
• Strong multitasking, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
• Keen attention to detail and proficiency in documentation.
• Preferred experience in an orthopedic, specialty, or multi-specialty medical practice.
• Familiarity with prior authorization processes and insurance verification is preferred.
• Experience with the athenahealth patient portal and messaging features is advantageous.
• Knowledge of HIPAA standards and telehealth/remote-work compliance requirements is preferred.
• Prior experience managing high volumes of inbound and outbound patient calls is preferred.
• Full-time contractor position.
• 40 hours of work per week.
• Pay rate is negotiable based on skillset and experience.
• Monday to Friday schedule, from 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
