Behavioral Health Crisis Clinician – Full-Time, Overnight

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.

📋 Description

• Conduct telephonic initial screenings, assessments, reviews, triage, and referrals.

• Receive and manage escalated calls related to urgent or emergent mental health, substance use, psychiatric, or medical needs.

• Make clinical triage decisions based on limited information obtained from telephonic screenings.

• Ensure that callers receive thorough screenings and suitable referrals.

• Contact and mobilize EMS, CIT officers, police, mobile crisis teams, and other community first responders as necessary.

• Engage in the Decision to Warn protocol for callers expressing active homicidal ideation, in accordance with policy.

• Report to Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services when appropriate.

• Identify high-risk populations and those with special healthcare needs, referring them to Care Coordination.

• Review caller history in the client management system to ascertain appropriate referral options.

• Schedule assessment appointments with contracted providers through the electronic scheduling system.

• Complete specialized screening documentation and record call activity in the MCO tracking system.

• Operate a multifunction phone system and multiple software applications while addressing caller needs.

• Conduct follow-ups to ensure consumers attend their scheduled assessments and crisis follow-up appointments.

• Route calls to the appropriate MCO departments when inquiries cannot be addressed by the Call Center.

• Monitor incoming faxes and overflow vendor reports to guarantee timely attention to written referrals.

• Engage interpreter services when required.

• Provide oversight and clinical review of calls managed by the overflow vendor.

• Assist callers facing barriers to accessing care and identify available resources.

• Offer consultation and support to non-licensed Call Center staff.

• Train new staff and provide ongoing training on Call Center operations.

• Recognize and report quality concerns and unusual call/service-seeking patterns to supervisors.


⛳️ Requirements

• Master’s degree in a Human Services field.

• A minimum of three (3) years of post-degree experience in a community, business, or governmental program that delivers mental health support services.

• A current, active, and unrestricted behavioral health license issued by a North Carolina Professional Board: LCSW, LCMHC, LCAS, LPA, or LMFT.

• Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, client rights, mandatory reporting, and confidentiality.

• Familiarity with Crisis Intervention, Motivational Interviewing, and Systems Theory.

• Understanding of culturally competent practices.

• Knowledge of DSM-5.

• Comprehensive understanding of the MCO/LME structure within the North Carolina mental health system.

• Thorough knowledge of ASAM Criteria and resources available in the identified catchment area.

• Proficiency in using multiple software platforms and strong keyboarding skills.

• Ability to troubleshoot minor technological issues independently.

• Capability to assess clinical levels of need over the phone.

• Ability to multitask and maintain focus in a distracting environment.

• Proficient in reading, interpreting, and implementing regulations, policies, and procedures.

• Ability to provide crisis response and effectively de-escalate difficult callers.

• Skill in coordinating with staff from various agencies.

• Ability to manage time, solve problems, and prioritize work independently.

• Must remain composed during high-stress, crisis-related calls.

• Must reside in North Carolina.

• Required to attend an initial 6 to 8-week virtual training period, Monday-Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

• Availability for some holiday hours is necessary.
