Backend Engineer, AI Engineering – Duo Chat

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Develop and uphold the engine that powers GitLab Duo Chat, GitLab’s conversational AI platform.

• Create secure, well-tested, and efficient features and enhancements for GitLab Duo Chat.

• Implement and expand agentic workflows in Python utilizing LangGraph, registered via the Flow Registry and delivered by the Duo Workflow Service.

• Integrate chat functionalities with the GitLab Rails monolith, encompassing its GraphQL API.

• Write maintainable code that adheres to internal standards for a high-scale environment, including tests for every merge request.

• Conduct code reviews following Code Review Guidelines and engage with external contributions.

• Identify technical debt and propose solutions to enhance team productivity.

• Collaborate with Product Management, User Experience, and Frontend teams to ensure product quality, security, and performance.

• Participate in Tier 2 or Tier 3 on-call rotations during weekdays, weekends, and occasional nights.

• Work asynchronously with backend, frontend, and AI specialists across various time zones.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience with Python, including the development and testing of production services.

• Working knowledge of Ruby on Rails, or a willingness to learn it.

• Familiarity with, or strong interest in, building on large language models, including prompting, tool or function invocation, evaluation, and handling non-deterministic systems' failure modes.

• Experience in designing and developing APIs, including identifying and optimizing performance issues.

• Comfortable working with well-documented third-party services.

• Security-focused development approach that applies secure coding guidelines from the outset.

• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing about technical challenges and iterative solutions.

• Capacity to manage work independently, prioritize tasks, and seek assistance when necessary.

• Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or a similar agent orchestration framework.

• Familiarity with GraphQL and RSpec.

• Experience using or contributing to the GitLab product.

• Background in working within a remote, globally distributed team.
