Applied Mechanical Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Idaho.

📋 Description

• Provide mechanical engineering support for an innovative advanced reactor design initiative.

• Utilize engineering principles to address mechanical challenges related to the motion and dynamics of heat, gases, air, fluids, and solid materials.

• Conduct system and component design, evaluation, documentation, testing, configuration management, fabrication oversight, and implementation.

• Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers.

• Engage in mechanical system design and evaluation while supporting project execution and implementation activities.

• Design reactor vessels in accordance with the ASME BPVC for high-temperature applications, considering creep and fatigue factors.

• Develop high-temperature gaskets, sealing systems, and bolting solutions.

• Document designs for electromechanical devices, including approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions for control rod or drum drive mechanisms.

• Break down project objectives into well-defined and controlled design requirements using a systems engineering approach and digital engineering tools.

• Implement discipline best practices, design methodologies, technologies, and processes to create and validate designs.

• Establish testing, inspection, and quality standards.

• Oversee or ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement activities align with the approved design.

• Ensure that designs meet technical baseline requirements and adhere to applicable codes and regulations.

• Develop, verify, and maintain configuration management for the technical baseline and assigned systems.

• Ensure consistency in operating characteristics across drawings, technical manuals, operating instructions, and emergency operating procedures.

• Coordinate with designers, customers, and analysts to establish experiment requirements, finalize designs, oversee fabrication and inspection, lead assembly, support installation and testing, and create integrated analyses to demonstrate compliance with facility safety bases.

• Perform design, fabrication, and related activities to support reactor operations and experimentation.

• Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Reactor Project Engineer or Engineering Manager.


⛳️ Requirements

• Expertise in designing mechanical systems in accordance with relevant national consensus codes and standards, particularly the ASME B31 series and ASME BPVC.

• Demonstrated experience in designing reactor vessels for high-temperature applications, considering creep and fatigue factors.

• Proven background in creating high-temperature gaskets, sealing systems, and bolting solutions.

• Familiarity with design techniques, tools, and principles for generating precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

• Understanding of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including the principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment involved in the design and production of goods and services.

• Capability to apply general rules to specific problems and develop logical solutions.

• Ability to synthesize information to form general rules or conclusions, identifying relationships among seemingly unrelated events.

• Proficient in listening to and comprehending verbally communicated information and ideas, as well as conveying technical information clearly to others.

• Ability to identify potential problems or issues as they arise.

• Experience in supporting the design of innovative or advanced nuclear reactors within a multidisciplinary team environment (preferred).

• Familiarity with systems engineering, digital engineering tools, requirements tracking, design parameter management, and configuration management (preferred).

• Experience with electromechanical devices such as control rod or drum drive mechanisms (preferred).

• Background in supporting fabrication, construction, assembly, procurement, inspection, experiment installation, testing, reactor operations, or experimentation (preferred).

• Experience in developing integrated analyses to demonstrate compliance with facility safety standards (preferred).

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program, along with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program with at least 6 years of relevant experience.

• US citizenship is required.

• Must be willing to travel to Idaho as necessary.
