VP, Software Engineering

📋 Description

• Report directly to the Chief Technology Officer.

• Take ownership of engineering for the Seven Bridges Platform, encompassing architecture, delivery, and production operations.

• Manage platform reliability, costs, technical debt, and observability.

• Lead engineering teams mainly located in India and Serbia across various sites and time zones.

• Hold architectural authority for the platform and collaborate on boundary decisions with security, federal compliance, and quality leadership.

• Collaborate with a cross-business AI Engineering team.

• Allocate approximately 40% of your time to hands-on technical tasks and 60% to people leadership and organizational delivery.

• Define the technical vision for the platform for the next three years.

• Convert the technical vision into a structured architecture and roadmap.

• Oversee architecture decisions of record, design reviews, multi-tenant isolation, and complexity reduction.

• Govern infrastructure-as-code under CI with policy-as-code, short-lived credentials, progressive rollout, and audit-ready change evidence.

• Manage SLOs, error budgets, cross-site on-call design, and architectural enhancements stemming from recurring incidents.

• Deliver governed AI in the product and implement governed, measured AI-assisted engineering.

• Foster management depth, specialist skills, and a thriving team during periods of growth.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of experience in software engineering, including several years in leadership roles overseeing multi-team organizations through managers.

• Expertise in distributed systems and platform architecture at scale, including multi-tenant isolation and service decomposition.

• In-depth knowledge in scientific or biomedical data platforms, such as genomics, bioinformatics, life sciences, or similar data-intensive, workflow-driven scientific computing.

• Experience delivering within a regulatory framework such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, ISO 13485, or GxP.

• Proficiency in reliability and modern delivery engineering: SLOs, error budgets, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD with policy-as-code and progressive rollout.

• Proven capability in shipping production AI/LLM under compliance regulations, or AI-assisted engineering that is governed and measured beyond pilot projects.

• A successful track record of establishing a technical vision for a platform and guiding an organization towards it.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Familiarity with CWL/WDL/Nextflow, GA4GH standards (DRS/WES), FHIR or OMOP.

• Experience with federated or cross-institutional data access at scale.

• Knowledge of federal program delivery and artifact literacy, including authorization packages, significant change requests, and corrective action plans.

• Architectural expertise in inference topology, including hosting trade-offs, retrieval with per-tenant authorization, evaluation harnesses, and guardrails.

• Experience in delivering reusable product capabilities from grant- or program-funded initiatives.

• Ability to articulate a three-year platform vision while integrating scientific, regulatory, and technological trends.

• Capability to read code, designs, and test results directly.

• Competence in building and holding a capable management layer accountable.

• Proficiency in making timely hiring and performance decisions.

• Ability to design for auditability, traceability, and reproducibility.

• Skill in making timely, defensible decisions amid ambiguity and documenting the reasoning behind such decisions.
